fricking love Candyman and it's on the level with Scream. The Passion of the Christ is also up there.

My vote goes for the Ring - the last movie that scared me. Probably not considered a horror movie but Frailty was pretty disturbing.

Nice work, dumbass. Off the top of my head: The Descent Cabin in the Woods 28 Days Later Looking at a list of horror films since 1992, these are some that I've really enjoyed: TCM remake If Scream counts, then yes. Alien 3 Leprechaun (not so much scary, but definitely enjoyable) Wes Craven's New Nightmare Species From Dusk Till Dawn Event Horizon Devil's Advocate I Know What You Did Last Summer Blair Witch Project House on Haunted Hill Sixth Sense Sleepy Hollow Pitch Black Thir13een Ghosts The first half of Jeepers Creepers Ghost Ship (even if only for the great, great opening scene) Them The Strangers Triangle Wrong Turn Dawn of the Dead The first 2/3 of The Forgotten The first Resident Evil The Mist The Ring The Hills Have Eyes Saw 30 Days of Night 1408 The Poughkeepsie Tapes Identity Frailty Cloverfield Paranormal Activity (would be even better had the trailer not ruined the ending) Pandorum Zombieland The Crazies Open Water Grave Encounters The Woman in Black The Possession I wanted to do from 1990 on, cuz that would've included shite like Tremors and Arachnophobia, but he said 20 years..

Does Audition count? I'm going with the Ring or the Descent. The Descent would've been terrifying even without the monsters.

I don't get all the love for The Ring. The only part that was scary........... SPOILERS was when they opened the closet to show the dead chick's face. The rest was pretty meh for me.

I was gonna list a few that I've heard good things about, and Audition was gonna be one of them. The Orphanage is another one.

Would yall agree that more mental stuff is "scarier" than flat out gruesome/gross right? And as far as best horror goes that would simply mean the best movie overall right? Plot, Acting, Killing scenes, etc.. not necessarily whether or not it was the scariest? Or maybe the best should be the scariest? I don't know the rules here..
Good post. I've said this many times before on this board, but I think it is undeniable that the Blair Witch Project is the best and scariest horror movie in the last 20 years. Many of the movies on people's lists are not that scary, just fun to watch. Saw was ground breaking. Scream was just a commentary. Blair Witch Project is the best in my opinion because, like the text I quoted mental is far more scary than gore. To me, the Blair Witch Project captured that better than any other horror film. I could care less about the supernatural part/existence of the Witch. The part that is so scary to me is when they are lost and they can't find their way out. The video camera and acting are so well done in those moments where they build their hopes up and then reach such desperation that give me chills because that is a fear that is a real fear. I don't get fear of monsters and other things, but fear of the unknown and being alone are pretty potent. Show me another film that does it better than Blair Witch Project. I guess Funny Games is good because it makes you feel helpless because the family is helpless. Just my two cents. I could go on more about the Blair Witch Project if need be. Just know that it belongs at the very top of this list, and it's not debatable.

In terms of movies that scared me absolutely shitless: Paranormal Activity The Ring The Grudge These might not be the "best" horror movies in terms of reviews and such, but they managed to hit on many different things that personally creep me out. In terms of best movies in the Horror genre, that aren't necessarily scary, but just incredibly well made and well reviewed: Se7en 28 Days Later Scream Now, for the best horror film no one heard about: The Orphanage It's a Spanish film, check it out, you won't regret it

i thought scream was very well done. The ring was just ok for me. I just really couldn't get on board with the premise. I'm hoping sinister will live up to this critics review
