It can't be someone he's already met unless he's changing names to throw off his kids. His kids know their mom's name so once they hear it they would know.
I'm also hoping for a threeway involving Nora and Quinn and Stella.

Ted at the end of a Thanksgiving episode ends up with Barney at a strip club and starts talking to a stripper named Tracy and goes "And thats how I met your mother"
The kids freak out and he says hes just kidding. The theory is they know teir mothers first name and thought that was their mother as the stripper because her first name is Tracy
I dont buy it. I think it was a joke and ots under the assumption that everything that happens in the show is being told to the kids (which i dont think is the case)

Couldn't some of the surprise just be from the fact that Tracy is NOT their mother's name and suddenly they just found out the woman they thought was their mother all this time actually isn't their mother?

I think you missed the point
If the stripper name of Tracy was real or fake it wouldnt matter to the kids because either way the mothers name would still be Tracy(if you believe the theory)

Nope. That's assuming that the kids don't know that strippers go by fake names on stage. He could have said any name and then said "and that's how I met your mother."
