| Question for the OB dads (Posted on 10/3/12 at 10:42 am)
My 5yo son wants me to get him a bow for either Christmas or his birthday. I was looking at the Bear Brave III, but I was concerned if he would be able to shoot it or not. He's kinda on the small size for his age. The description says that it has a 15lb draw. I also saw some vids of a 5yo shooting a Nuclear Ice from bowtech but I dont want to spend $250 on his first bow. Do ya'll think the Brave would be ok or are there some other options that I haven't looked in to?

Wow at 5 y/o? My son is 4 and I can't imagine giving him anything more than a toy bow and nerf guns.

I would start him off with a recurve type something similar to a Bear Lil Brave 2. Thats what I did, and now he is 8 and is currently shooting a Mathews Genesis.

I thought about that too, but he wants one that looks like mine and the Brave is about right and it's only $60.

this.. my 7 year old (last year) wasn't strong enough to enjoy it. bought him a Buck Series Red Ryder.. And then I went and bought me a full size red Ryder. We are some BB shooting fools.

I gave hime the option of a Cricket .22 or a bow and he chose the bow. Either would be locked up to where he couldn't get it unless I was around. He's my outdoor loving child, the other one is an "inside" kid so he's probably getting an Ipod or a Nintendo DS.

I got something like this when I was about 4. When I started bringing squirrels and robins, I mean blackbirds, home he figured I was ready to move up to a compound bow for hunting. That was at around 9yrs old I think.

We have bought bows for 3 kids now, and if my husband can get cell service from his camp in MS, I will ask him to respond. There is a very good bow shop in Pearl River, but check the hours before you go, b/c they're not predictable. As a mom, I would say don't get something that's too big and will frustrate him and ruin his confidence.

Get him a toy first. 5 is way too young in my opinion.

Those recurves are almost as tall as he his, thats why I was looking at the compounds because of the axle to axle length being shorter. I thought it would just be easier to handle.

He's had a toy bow for a year now, the one with the suction cup arrows, and the lack of power and accuracy upsets him. This would only be for shooting in the backyard when I'm shooting mine. It doesn't have to be strong enough to kill anything.

What about a cheap recurve? Let him play with it, gain some arm strenght, grow a little, and then move him up.
