Exam (2009 film)

I saw this mentioned in a thread a few weeks ago, and bought it. Finally got around to watching it a couple nights ago, and I really liked it a lot.

Some of you may remember me recommending Cube in threads around here. Well Exam is in the same vein as Cube basically. It's a fairly cheaply-made movie with a cool concept and interesting plot. I've taken a spoiler-free excerpt from the Plot Synopsis on Wiki to sort of explain/set up the movie.
quote:

The film is set in present-time United Kingdom in an alternate history, where a disease called The Virus has made a large part of the population dependent on medication that must be taken every few hours to prevent falling into a coma followed by death. Most of the film takes place in a single room, where eight candidates take an exam for an important job as the Personal Assistant to the CEO of a mysterious bio-tech company that is said to work on a cure for The Virus.

The Invigilator, a representative of the company, explains that the exam takes 80 minutes and consists of one question only, and that there are three rules: do not talk to the Invigilator or the armed guard at the door, do not spoil the paper, and do not leave the room. Not obeying the rules will result in disqualification. After the clock starts, it turns out that the question papers are blank.

The rest of the movie is basically the candidates trying to figure out what is going on and if things are as they seem. It's a really cool mystery/thriller kind of film from start to finish. It requires some suspension of belief, but all in all, I really like it a lot and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of movies like those.

Anybody seen it?

Saw it a while back. I figured out the ending at the beginning, but I still enjoyed it. Cool concept and generally not done poorly.

I enjoy movies along the lines of the Exam. Any other suggestions? I have already watched Cube.

I've actually watched it twice. Saw it a long time ago and then watched it again recently.

Big fan of movies like this one. Enjoyed it a lot.

I liked it quite a bit, the only (fairly large) gripe being that the characters didn't react very realistically.

I stumbled across it randomly on Netflix one day and decided to give it a shot. Really liked it a lot. Thought about buying the DVD. The suspense they build inside that one room is really well done. It doesn't ever meander or get boring.

Have you seen any of the sequels to Cube? I believe there are two. I loved the first one, but was hesitant to check out the others for fear of it being overdone and weak.

As for other movies similar to those...hmmm...

Them - French horror/thriller film that The Strangers (which I also liked) was essentially a remake of. There are subtitles, but not a lot (not much dialogue). Cool, creepy, and a better version of The Strangers.

Trollhunter - Also foreign (Norweigan), but a really cool found-footage movie about trolls in Norway, and the man who hunts them. It's fricking awesome.

This was a list I gave to Pilot Tiger a few weeks ago. These are similar to this thread (I removed Them since I already mentioned it)...

quote:

Cube (1998) - very cool concept for a movie
Triangle (2009) - watch no trailers for this one because they ruin the movie
House of 9 (2005) - cool movie about 9 people trapped in a house; survivor gets the money
Funny Games (2008) - fricked up movie about teens who torture/murder people for fun (it's a remake with Naomi Watts)

Some of those are more thriller-ish than scary/horror. But all are good. I have them ranked in the order that I'd recommend watching them in. You should be able to watch trailers for all of them to decide for yourself, but definitely don't watch one for Triangle like I said. Just maybe read a short synopsis about it and either watch it or don't. It's good though.

Yeah, it definitely requires a solid suspension of belief. I almost put that in my OP.

The original Funny Games was fantastic.

The remake was hilariously bad.

I thought it was good, for what it was.

What made the original better? I wouldn't be against watching that one..

good movie, decent plot, little sub-par execution and tacky ending

Good question, especially since they're both directed by the same man (Michael Haneke) and are essentially shot-for-shot identical.

I think the casting was poorly done in the US version. Tim Roth struggled to find the appropriate balance between fear and helplessness and just ended up wasting his character's screen time.

Also, for whatever reason, and I have a couple theories as to why (again, mostly cast related) the scenes that make you cringe are so much more watered down in the US version, especially on an emotional scale.

Not to sound TOO snobby, but the first one just had a much more profound impact on me and the way I thought about film than the second, which I just found to be another in a long line of Hostel-like attempts at situational horror/terror.

Cube 1997?

Related, seeing as how you like this type of flick, you might enjoy this youtube series called the vault:

episode 1

Explain this one...I remember there was a show I saw some commercials for years ago, and I think it was called The Vault. I never did catch it on TV, but it was basically like some sort of puzzle game show thing. Is that what this is..? If not, what's this one about...and also if not, does anybody else remember that show I am talking about?

re: Exam (2009 film)

This "The Vault" is an original web series that was made on a shoestring budget. Basically, each episode of the vault is about a student/ contestant trying to figure a way out of a room. It is kind of set like a game show in that the participants are contestants, but it is not an actual game show. I do see on wiki a British game show called the vault, but it is unrelated.

I liked the concept of Exam and the overall feel of the movie but i felt like the ending was thrown together and involved the characters making unreasonable leaps and overly incredible deductive reasoning.
