40 from New Orleans... I lived the era... I like the Pixies, but my earlier statement still stands....

Yaah, I would'v guessed older. People who didn't live through it would probably be shocked at how huge the Replacements were, given their relatively small and uneven recorded they left behind. Bastards of Young was a massive statement of purpose at the time. Almost a rallying point song for the freaks in your high school.

Did the 'Mats even play in Louisiana? I am guessing yes (if they played Atlanta, they certainly played NOLA, right?). Also, both bands didn't really coexist (the Mats petered out before the Pixies's coup d'etat on the music world).

not in the South baby (I guess NOLA was the exception).

Wow, again, I take it you're from NOLA. I could count the number of people who had Tim on one hand, and still have fingers left over.

yes, they played the south/louisiana... They were always big on college radio regardless of geographical boundries... Although REM was king of southern college rock... When Bob got kicked out of the band, they pretty much turned into a Westerberg solo project... I first saw The Pixies open for U2 on Joshua Tree tour... I want to say Thanksgiving Day in NOLA...

I agree, college radio became boundary-less in the early 80's. As Westerberg said, 'Left of the Dial'.

I'm from Maryland. A little younger (37 now), but every kid I knew had a copy of Let It Be. Though Fugazi was bigger for us, locally.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Sonic Youth is a band who I like intellectually, but actually hate all of their output. I even own four of their albums and spent most of my youth pretending I liked them. I don't. I find their music to be borderline unlistenable. Hugely influential, and I really do appreciate their role in the rise of independent music, but man... I really do not enjoy them at all. I love the idea of Sonic Youth, not Sonic Youth.
Agree with all of this 100%

I still listen to queen Elvis. I got to see robin hitchcock basically play queen Elvis solo acoustic one time. Phenomenal. I've been really disappointed with stuff his done the Last 10 years. But he's old.

I really like Sonic Youth, but there records are uneven... The 5 year span of 86-92, were incredible... EVOL. Sister, Daydream Nation, Goo and Dirty... fricking amazing... After that, Ive liked songs here and there but dont think any of the albums are essential listening...

huge. bridged 80s college rock with 90s grunge. eta: i was a huge robyn hitchcock fan. now that's underrated. i think the pixies have gotten their due. saw them a couple years ago at the fox in atl. played entire doolittle album. terrific.

I saw The Pixies in BR at the Varsity, mid to late 80s.
