| ESPN Interview with Kilinsmann (Posted on 9/29/12 at 2:02 pm)
LINK When asked about Eric Lichaj getting a call-up soon:
quote:
Eric has always been on our list and the more he plays, the closer he gets. Right now it's not the right time to bring in a bunch of new players. Every coach wants to see young players coming through the system, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Eric for myself, with the group. 2013 will be a big year with qualification and also the Gold Cup. We'll have to build two rosters. Hopefully there's an opportunity for Eric coming up in the near future if he keeps starting at Aston Villa.
Also talks about Jozy, Gatt, Stu Bear, and a few other things.

In general I like Klinsy, but I think this is bull shite. If he's going to bring in Gatt because we have a wing problem (or for whatever reason he chose), then he HAS to bring in Lichaj as well. Lichaj is already proven on the NT level, and additionally his replacing Johnson at LB would allow Johnson to shift up into the wing spot. Didn't we have an issue with creative attacking play against Jamaica? Yeah? What? We did? I thought so. Also, Lichaj, in his NT appearances, has proven that he can make the overlapping runs that Johnson makes (actually, which he didn't make in that first Jamaica game). We arguably have less depth at LB than we do at wing, so I don't get wtf Klinsmann is talking about here. Given my above stated opinion, this just annoys the shite out of me: quote:
"Having Fabian at left back is outstanding because he plays a position where we were lacking in the past. He's one of the best left backs in Germany. Now people are noticing it because he's starting to score goals. [As for] playing him further up the field, we don't have another left back with the same quality for how we play, and again, we have so many midfielders that we'll keep him there for right now."

I feel like his not so hidden agenda of German favoritism is showing up in this article. He actually addresses our weakness at LB but says lichaj hasn't proven himself. Does not compute if you ask me. ETA: also lichaj isn't a new guy he's been around for a while just continually neglected by klinsmann.

I mean I'm sure he is biased to some extent as far as German players but not totally. He is definitely a control freak; (one of the reasons he didn't become the U.S. sooner was that he demanded complete control of the team) and obviously has forms grudges against players easily. If he has something against Lichaj I couldn't say but it's pretty obvious the kid deserves a call up

Do y'all think Zusi will have an increased role in these next 2 wcq's due to how he played in our last match and his recent form for SKC has been great

I would be absolutely ok with that, but I don't think he is a regular starter. Provides solid depth though.

I love what he did against Jamaica. Put some great shots on/around the goal. It's always good to have a guy who's a threat from finding the back of the net from a long way out.

JK pisses me off re: Lichaj. How many chances is Parkhurst going to get before Lichaj gets his first? As thin as we are behind Cherundolo, Lichaj's exclusion is unacceptable IMO. We were a better team when he played in the Gold Cup last year.
