I would agree with Eminem. He brought a lot of suburban white kids into rap that had never been there before. Myself included. He somehow made it feel ok for kids to rap about raping and murdering people. ETA: I think that a rap star is almost definitely the answer because of the music this generation listens to for the most part. It ain't my focus, but I still appreciate some of it.

Eddie Vedder is damn near 50 years old. He is obviously not within the generation I specified in the OP

Jack White is a solid answer too, he is probably my favorite artist of our generation.

Maybe I'm just biased but I don't see much current rap standing the test of time. However I will say if any of them do Eminem stands the best chance.

Yes. Anyone who performs music for a living is a musician. Now are they artists? Well, some are some aren't.

that's cool, I personally never considered a singer a musician, unless they played an instrument ....

All I have to say is that if the likes of Eminem and Kanye are being mentioned seriously in this thread (do either of them actually play an instrument? can either of them sing in tune with a real vibrato? ), then this thread is useless without including Lady Gaga (who is a piano virtuoso and a hell of a singer), and Adele, who is the best young female singer since probably Whitney Houston (not to mention, a really good songwriter, a la Carole King).

Like I said anyone who performs music for a living is a musician. That is the very definition of a musician. Now to be an artist a person must create art. In other words if you don't write your music you can not call yourself an artist. It is possible to be a musician without being an artist.

John Frusciante is in the conversation for me but Tom Morello has never struck me as more than a novelty act. I understand that a lot of people adore him but I don't find his little experimental tricks near as impressive as an experimental guitarist like Jack White.

Neither lady gaga noradele have been around long enough to prove they are legitimate in this conversation to me. Dylan didn't sing in tune, but his songwriting its what made him great. Eminem has some solid writing skills. The meaning may not be deep, but it is a work of art. I am not saying eminem is today's dylan our in any way saying eminem stands on a level near dylan, but then neither does our generations music as a whole if you ask me
