I actually like Barney and Robin together, and it makes perfect sense in the context of the show which is about maturing and accepting responsibility.

Though I thought the best bit of meta commentary was Barney summing up the entire show's history in one minute.

That makes sense and all, but they were horrible together. The actors actually looked miserable. They just don't have that chemistry that some actors have. The writers didn't even attempt to make the relationship believable. After their relationship is over, the writers decide that their soulmates?

I disagree. I understand your second point, but the show has done SO MUCH to establish these characters and their beliefs and what they want, not just in relationships and whatnot, but in life overall. And neither of them want the same things. And then all of a sudden they throw them together. Then, like someone else said, they do SO MUCH to show you that they're both completely over each other and moved on, and in one episode, all of that previous shite is tossed out the window and they're on their way to getting back together again.

It's frustrating that the show seems to try so hard to establish these things over here only to pull the rug out and be like "Nah...it's those things over there actually." And then go back and forth between the two several times. I can understand why some people would be insulted by that.

Thank you Cocomo, i cant go out and write the billion paragraphs i want to on why it makes no sense but maye later tonight

ETA Barneys maturation should have been him realizing he never actually wanted Robin except when he couldnt have her. Him maturing shouldve been him realizig they wante completely different things and that their relationship sucked for a reason.

This is how I felt after the Robin's kids episode. I found it insulting. Some people on here thought it was a great episode, but I found it to be one of what has turned into a long line insults to the viewer, and the most egregious one to me personally.

If I see that yellow umbrella one more time without them showing me her face, I'm going to shove it up Ted's ass.

All of a sudden? They've been moving those two together since Season 3. I can see you not wanting them together, but to argue it was done haphazardly and at the last minute doesn't seem to jive with the history of the show, which has always posited that these two are the male/female equivalents of one another.

And I think the two characters do a lot to show they are over each other, but it's never convincing. They are not over each other, and they fall into the concept of "soul mates" that HIMYM keeps dipping into. They fight against their fate, but it is still their fate.

The show keeps going back and forth on events because it has to have narrative tension or there is no show. You already have one couple that has narrative tension, Lilly and Marhsall. You can't have a whole show of people in established, functional relationships or the show is over.

Also, Quinn seems like too cool of a chick to really care about that.

THIS.

Yet another assinine character development the writers did.

She's a stripper, completely col about every thing else, yet, "Oh my god, you are still friends with someone you dated???!!!?!!"

Come on, man.

They made it out like Barney had lied to her about it though.

I don't think they are in love. I don't think they get married. Barney freaking out about his tie is a metaphor for his relation ship with Robin and Quin. Barney want's the other "tie".

That's just Barney's personality. He made the same type of comments when they talk about him and Quinn getting married

I agree with Baloo that Barney and Robin do make sense together, I just feel like its kinda forced. Basically the writers say, we have these two single friends, lets start to put them together. I think they've done a good job of showing that, but I liked them more with the other characters they've dated (Kevin, Nora, Quinn, etc.)

Barney needs a three way with Nora and Quinn. He would then take the championship belt and beat Ted to death with it. We later find out that the two kids are actually Barney's. They both come from the three way. One kid is Quinn's and the other is Nora's. In my opinion that would be the best way to wrap up this show.

re: How I Met Your Mother Season 8 full season thread

Well frick...I had just typed out two long paragraphs in response to this, and then accidentally clicked back and lost it.
quote:

The show keeps going back and forth on events because it has to have narrative tension or there is no show. You already have one couple that has narrative tension, Lilly and Marhsall. You can't have a whole show of people in established, functional relationships or the show is over.

My basic point was that maybe I was missing something when I started watching the show (because I didn't have the first three seasons' worth of history to draw upon), but I don't think Robin and Barney have been being "pushed" since then. Maybe I was off on reading that though.

But in a show that tries to be so self-referential and tries so hard to make sure that minute details matter to the overall plot of the show, it sure as hell seems to do things solely for filler. They've built this huge vault of information that is crucial to the plot of the show, but then they go and fill half seasons with irrelevant shite. I can understand the "I don't really care about the plot or who the mother is, I just like the show because it's entertaining" argument, and I actually pretty much agree with that viewpoint. I just don't like how they finally let Barney grow up a bit (with his relationship to Nora) and finally let him meet the girl of his dreams, only to have that rug pulled out. Same thing with Robin and Kal Penn (although admittedly, that was always seeming to go nowhere). They're together, and it doesn't seem to feel right. Then they're not. Then they are. Going back and forth is one thing, but at some point it almost seems disingenuous...like they are just toying with the audience knowing they're just gonna pull the rug out from under them again (and again). Like I said, I can understand why that would upset/frustrate viewers. It's like they want to do things and set up certain things just so they can be like "HAHA, frick you." Perfect example is it wasn't but about 5 or so episodes ago that Ted was confessing his undying love for Robin. WTF?

That I actually believe. However I do think they threw that in just to screw with us.

From the first scene, it appears that Ted breaks up with Victoria at Barney and Robin's wedding, maybe because he realizes that she is not "the one." Then he meets the Mom at the train station?

re: How I Met Your Mother Season 8 full season thread

Perhaps my perspective is a little different... I was married at 24 and divorced at 27, and spent a few years in my late 20s as the "single guy." I even had the "married couple" and "single friend to get in trouble with" in my life.

None of Ted's waffling, does this new girl like me / does she not, falling in (and out of) love all over the place, disastrous dates, failed relationships and general douchebaggery surprise me in the least.

I was a walking disaster for a few years, and I've managed to straighten it out. Part of the allure of the show for me is seeing if the son of a bitch can ever right the ship.
