Torlock.com (download a anonymous program and then utorrent). Find the torrent (ton of free blu rays), click "torrent" and then it'll load in utorrent and download.

How can you have outstanding performances but not a good film?

You guys need to view it and grade it on the whole. That's the problem with so many "reviews" in this thread.

I kinda get what he's talking about....like in the movie J. Edgar, Leo did a great job but that movie was super mediocre.

But as far as this movie goes, I'm excited to see it. Paul Thomas Anderson makes good stuff.

It's easy: J Phoenix put on an outstanding physical, expressionistic performance (that lip scar only helped) and PSH, a versatile as hell actor, played a character that had this amazing, roiling intensity underneath the surface of his gregarious charlatan persona.

however, the story was a bit too elliptical, I agree it meanders. and I think you can make great movies that way, but The Master is not one of them. I don't know how you can go see that movie and presume to care about any of the characters. They're fascinating from in an academic light, i.e. getting a look at how cult of personalities rise to power, and the way their misguided, occasionally misanthropic followers operate and come into being. but the heart of every movie has a story you care about. there was a big cavity in the narrative strength of this film

re: "The Master" is HORRIBLE - don't waste time/money on this POS

I've posted on this before and I'll reiterate it again here:

This movie isn't horrible, but it is not good film making.

The plot plods forward on a sloth's timeline then jump cuts abruptly toward the end of the movie as a means of advancing the story. But it doesn't really do anything to advance the story. Instead, it leaves the audience disjointed and confused.

The performances are well done. PSH and Phoenix do well as what they are expected to be. Phoenix in particular does well portraying a guy who has clearly lost it.

In many ways, the characters are foils of each other, reflecting back the good and bad parts of each other's personalities. Nevertheless, their interaction is not enough to keep the film interesting. About half way through, I nearly walked out. I stayed purely because of the reviews, thinking that there must be more to it than this.

But there wasn't.

re: "The Master" is HORRIBLE - don't waste time/money on this POS

Paul Thomas Anderson to me is Hit or miss. When he has a Hit (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) it is incredible. Both Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood are masterpieces IMO. (as well as two of his better known films)

But when he is miss i wont say his films are bad, but rather "meh" (Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love) as in there is something about them that just does not work.

So it is not entirely possible that The Master may not be that good. I was hyped for it and read the script a couple of months back and to be honest......I wasn't feeling it. From reading the script it seemed like there really was no plot because the characters went nowhere. There really was no conflict, no growth, nothing. So after I read it I thought maybe it would come across better on screen. But from what some people are saying it sounds like the film suffers from the same issues I had with the script. Im going to hold off judgment before I actually see it.

Mostly this. I didn't think it was horrible, and there were times where it was really compelling (mostly due to the performances), but it REALLY dragged on for no good reason. Honestly, when I saw the thread title, I was thinking OP was probably just being a douche so I went to the movie anyway. I was pretty disappointed.

edit: Just read the OP. This was still a terrible thread, but I think OP's heart was in the right place.

eta: Loved There Will Be Blood and Punch-Drunk Love. Liked Magnolia. Never seen Boogie Nights

Because acting is only a part of the film. There's also writing and direction. I think Synechdoche, NY had wonderful performances in service of a pretentious, piece of crap script wit heavy handed direction that told us the point because the director didn't trust the audience.

I hate the movie, but I still think the acting was great. Haven't seen the Master yet, but great performances in a film that's not very good seems like par for the course of PT Anderson's career. SEE Nights, Boogie.

What's wrong with cartoons?

And, no, I didn't like Boogie Nights. It's aimless in its second half. I realize the William H Macy character's suicide is supposed to be a major tonal turning point of the film, but it's also the point the narrative structure just completely falls apart. Anderson has so many balls in the air, and he can't pull them together.

Julianne Moore, who I love BTW, has her big attempt to get her kids back, which of course fails for rather obvious reasons. Then she has that breakdown and we're supposed to feel sympathy for her, but why? Because we "know" her? she shouldn't be within a mile of her children, and the court makes sure she isn't. That's not tragic at all. She is a selfish, hedonistic person and then she suffers the consequences for these decisions, with children who are entirely off screen. Oh, it's a big deal because we made a plot thread about it halfway through the film? It's like if the Godfather had introduced Fredo right before the betrayal. It wouldn't have matetred and it would've felt tacked on, like it was.

Dirk Diggler isn't tragic because he lacks awareness, really. Things happen to him, but he's not an agent of change. He's the Forrest Gump of porn stars, just sliding through the events. I simply don't care about him in any meaningful way.

Great performances. Emminently quotable. Total narrative mess.

I meant no offense, but an explanation for why you didn't like the movie in your OP would have been nice.

re: "The Master" is HORRIBLE - don't waste time/money on this POS

To bump this old thread, I was kinda surprised to see that users on Yahoo movies, who generally always overrate every movie released, have the film at 2 out of 5 stars right now. Granted, there's only 97 ratings as of now, but I was surprised so many people hated it.

LINK /

On the Rotten Tomatoes link posted earlier, it shows 85% of critics liked it, with only 66% of the audience liking it.

I'm still gonna see it, but the opinions are very different and there's a big gap between critics and general moviegoers on this one.

re: "The Master" is HORRIBLE - don't waste time/money on this POS

I saw this past Sunday and enjoyed it. I do understand the complaints ITT though. This is a very "artsy" film that hinges on PHENOMENAL acting by JP & PSH. There were several scenes where I just sat back in awe at the acting chops these guys brought to the film.

The movie is billed as this huge stab at Scientology and while that is a part of the film it's better to go into it viewing that as background to the story of the life of Freddie Quill with regards to his relationship to the Master. The relationship between these two characters is so unlikely when you put this supposed intellectual with someone barely hanging onto their sanity but that really reveals how alike they are but one is the leader of this huge cultist movement while the other is a societal outcast.

JMO. I really liked it.
