It actually does work, they aren't trying to get the fanboys. They know they can't get them, it's impossible. They could make a phone that was infinitely better in every way and it would still be crap to the fanboys, so there is no point in targeting them. By making fun of them, they target their core and people on the fence who hate fanboys.
Let's us not forget that annoying frick from Apple commercials "I'm a Mac vs I'm a PC fat old guy." I like Apple and I wanted to kill that annoying frick.
