As a public school teacher, I dislike unionized teachers. Other than the breakdown of the family, its these lazy, selfish teachers, liberal, crooked unions, and incompetent admins that ruin our schools.

No surprise,...teachers are parents too The schools these Union Teachers teach in are typically full of societal problems. So they would prefer their own children not be exposed to just like you and I. If you can afford it, why would you put your children in that meat grinder system? Give you children a leg up and a better chance in this world...That's your responsiblity I don't blame them one bit... Be mad at society for having so many children in poor communities that have no business having 3 or 4 children out of wedlock. We're all paying for other people's sins and bad decisions....Section 8 vouchers, crime, teacher moral, fear, food stamps and all these government services when many of them pay zero federal taxes. more money can not fix people repeating ignorance

I'm guessing that group makes up the 20% of 8th graders that can read at their grade level?

Sounds good to me... Oh and frick every single one of the union members in Chicago. I wish Christie was the mayor. He'd put them in their fricking place.

It isn't because the teachers think that the public schools have bad teachers. It is because the public schools are literal jungles. It is white flight. Honest to goodness if you could see what happens in the average inner city middle school in the hallways when the bell rings and classes change, you would rather send your child to Angola than put them in there.

Amen brother Amen...you are 100% right on point. It's a joke what i have seen...but honestly, I think a lot of comes down to leadership with in each school. I've seen schools located in some really bad places do very well because the woman principal was a no none sense principal...the kids loved her, the parents loved her and the teachers like working for her. she was a born leader....not some 30 years in the teaching profession moved up to principal... She was a great leader...so it can be done 'sometimes" with great leadership. But from what I have seen in Durham NC, many school teachers just try to survive the day without too much conflict. Bottom line, it's an uphill battle with so many kids coming from broken families. I think they have a darn tough job...and society has taken the joy out of the profession

Makes sense. The only people that need protection from their bosses, demand to be paid WITHOUT evaluating performance, and want to be in union are those that are below average, and know it. They suck and they know it.

I don't want to appear to be defending the union here, but my perception of Chicago is the bad is as bad as anywhere in the country, and it's ugly and darn near impossible to teach these children. How many parents actually give a hoot about any of this mess? you can't suspend a student anymore because "he has no one at home to watch him or her"... "the mom just sent me to school, said I can't stay home" It's worse than you guys realize... The crap teachers put up with is unacceptable...but that falls at the feet of parenting...and there is only so much the schools can do with bad parenting and attitudes from them before they throw their arms up in the air and say "we'll do our best"

when the average teacher there makes $70k + and then you throw in the benifits, they can afford to send them to get an education

My wife runs the disciplinary unit of a district with about 10k students. So, she can have up to a hundred kids at a time and six or eight teachers working for her. She has her own little campus. The district is about 65%...shall we say economically disadvantaged. But anyway, the things these kids get sent to her for would turn your hair white. She recently got some that had been having sex in one of the bathrooms between classes complete with a cheering section.

wow...that's really really sad... No respect for themselves or each other. This is where Obama needs to take his hope and change message....right into these bathrooms... and into living rooms... These parents need to be doing their fair share or we are all going to drown in debt...in attempt to bandaid these types of situations...

Not taking that as a defense of the union... I suspect you're correct about teaching conditions. I'd expect they are pretty poor. And I'm sympathetic. No teacher should have to put up with disciplinary problems... But that being the case... shouldn't they be striking for stronger discipline, not higher pay?

Good question...well I was told by a superintendent of Durham (she was run off) in Durham several years ago, that tightening up discipline leads to more 3 days suspensions... Thus the kids on the streets where they actually want to be..so it feeds the kids desire to be out of school...then they create problems for police during the day etc... then you get your name in the paper "Why are so many more black students being suspended than whites?"...and round and round you we go nowhere

No doubt. THe real problem isn't the school administrators but our culture that encourages, accepts, and at times even defends (as you note) misbehavior. No school teachers can solve that problem.

My friend is a teacher in a terrible high school. At age 22 she was teaching 21-year-old sophomores. The discipline thing needs to be implemented in elementary school. By the time they are 21 and still in high school it's too late. Teachers shouldn't have to worry about getting sued if they so much as touch a kid. That's pathetic. The administration is not exactly clear though. For my friend, her administration would not support her. She found weed in a student's possession in her class and sent her to the principal. Despite the fact that this was beyond the school, the principal didn't even call the girl's parents, much less the police. She was back in class the next day. The principal of that school didn't allow my friend to give any grade lower than 59 even if a student didn't show up for a test. It's all about their own job security, less about giving a shite about the kids.
