This is the answer. Of course, not being a supersticious man, I know that they had no impact whatsoever...but coinkedink? I think not.

Joe Dean willingly accepting mediocrity (or even worse) from the football program might have had an impact, too.

In hindsight, the fan base did not expect excellence before Saban came in and won a National Championship to set the bar. Just having a winning season was considered successful in the 80's and 90's. Also, back then, the SEC as a whole wasn't nearly as dominant as it is now. Success and competition among rivals has made us all better.

It wasn't the fanbase but the Athletic Director, Joe Dean. The man was the very worst AD imagineable was less worried about winning and more about nickels and dimes that he "saved." He's a small thinker who didn't have the vision of what LSU was, could be and is now.

I don't think I said anything like that. A few good football players don't win anything. You have to recruit a lot of good players each year, at least wind up with 14-15 SEC quality players out each class going into their 3rd year to have a good run. Your 3rd & 4th classes need to have 25-30 players to have the maturity and experience to compete for a championship. You can add some 5th years player into this total. Prop 48 was a killer to LA football players for the late 80s and the most part of the 90s. LSU has always has it base as LA players and Prop 48 cut the number of good players out of LA to less than half. So what we got for that half was just not as good and LSU did not have enough good players to compete well.

Ruff was right on the money.

If Joe Dean could hire the governor, Blanco would be his 1st choice. Her presence did more than kill people after Katrina, it ended a very successful partnership in the LSU AD.

Buffoons like Edwards & Blanco do a lot of damage, people just want to laugh it off.

Coaching....Curly...Tepper and few other clowns did their part. BUT the biggest problem WAS NOT totally a lack of talent

As soon as I read an article where Tepper had stated it would take five years to fully implement his defense, I knew Dinardo would be in trouble. Five years to implement something for a sport where there's only four years to play is yelling "this is going to be a problem because it's gimmicky, not sound." The defense in 98 was just freaking pathetic. The offense was averaging around 30 points a game and Dinardo, in his blind loyalty to Tepper, blamed the offense for not scoring enough points when he was questioned about the OT 37-31 loss to Ole Miss.

I think recruiting, coaching, and play on the field were the biggest things holding up back. Lol

Basically hiring Mike Archer instead of Steve Spurrier which lead to Curly.
This! Archer was bad, Hallman we Nuclear bad in every way possible and Joe Dean kept him for 4 years too long. (I know he was here only 4 years!)

Per the Robiskie article below it states that Hinton and Williams were both signees in '71. Mike Williams lettered '72-'74 and Hinton '73-'75. If Hinton signed in '71 and lettered '73-'75, this means he didn't play in '72 unless he received a medical RS (I don't know if that was the case).

I think the point you are missing is that Dean limited his choices because he was unwilling to spend what was needed to upgrade the program.
Every business person knows there are two ways to increase your profits. Either grow the business by increasing sales or control expenses. Joe Dean was the ultimate in control your expenses businessmen. It was almost as if he couldn't see a connection between winning and increased revenue. He was content to operate the athletic department profitably, winning was a lower priority.

re: What caused LSU Football's putrid 90's run?

quote:

not old enough to remember why we were so bad.

It was bad. My first LSU game was the Miami of Ohio debacle in 1986. A few years later I remember getting tickets to a daytime SEC game (Kentucky, maybe?). I was excited until we arrived at Tiger Stadium and found whole sets of free tickets just laying around--the memory of a set of 8 tickets spread out on top of a garbage can near the West entrance is burned in my mind.

IMO the decline traces back to Archer and Curley--and Joe Dean's unwillingness to hire a top-notch coach. I don't remember the specific numbers, but Curley's salary was not much more than a mid-level attorney. I do know DiNardo started with a whopping salary of $350K.

Semi-related: What is the real story on Curley's departure? I've always heard he was caught cheating on his wife--at least that was the rumor when I was at LSU in 1994.

We had our basketball program to fall back on as for as making money was concerned.
