FWIW, in retrospect I am damn glad we did not get Mack Brown because he'd probably still be here.

Joe F'n Dean

and Curly was bout Crazy

As my dad pointed out when he came to visit me in LA in the early mid 90s he never saw LSU win a FB game in Tiger Stadium.... While my 15 yr old son thinks LSU is a dynasty ..... I like my son's perspective better and hope the run continues

re: What caused LSU Football's putrid 90's run?

Here's my thinking of why the dark years:

1. LSU was very tight with the money back then and didn't step up to the plate for facilities and coaches pay. Lost at least one recruit because of living conditions at school (dorms) and cafeteria not like FSU's.

2. Arnsbarger was a great coach but didn't recruit worth a crap. He won with Stovall's recruits (Who was a GREAT recruiter but had little coaching experience.)

3. During Archer's era a piece of crap in a wheel chair that represented the NAACP in the Baton Rouge area (think his name was George Eames) called LSU a raciest school and advised blacks not to go there (for some reason think it had something to do with LSU not having black QB). Couple that with Prop 48 and Archer was not able to recruit good talent.

4. Hallman started to get talent but was not a strong coach.

5. Dinardo recruited the talent and got LSU turned around but couldn't hire quality coaches to replace those lost and couldn't get facilities upgraded to compete with elite teams. All about the tight dollar issue again.

6. Saban comes in and they decided to upgrade facilities and pay more for coaches. That was the main reason he was able to turn the program around to what it is today.

The sad part of all this is if they (the Board and Administration) had wanted an ALABAMA type program, this could have been accomplished many, many years ago.

Mike Archer's inability to recruit worth a damn
You know Mike Archer catches a lot of crap about not being able to recruit but you had a Southern guy at the time screaming that LSU was racist and creating a lot of turmoil which did hurt in state recruiting.

Turning point:

After the 1986 season when Arnsparger left.
A faction of LSU players talked the BOS into hiring Mike Archer over:
Mike Shanahan, Steve Spurrier, or another coach with an Italian name whose name escapes me (coached Cleveland at one point.)

But the ultimate turning point was Lewis Benscotter losing his bearings and going too high on a private recruiting trip in early 1980. He died. Along with - new LSU coach Bo Rein.

That's the guy I was thinking of. I believe he was also a Southern guy.

He went to SDSU at a time elite powerhouses like Miami, Notre Dame, FSU and Nebraska were recruiting La. Everyone missed on him, the only guy that might have snagged him is Miles.
The reason why he went to SD State is because they recruited him as a running back. All the other schools wanted him to play DB. You hear this story every time Sd State played on TV.

Yes, Broadhead was gone. Part of the reason was Dale Brown did not want the Football Coach to be AD and he had a lot of political allies. Notice Joe Dean's background.

Some one mentioned Broadhead bringing the circus. Yeah the events surrounding his dismissal was a cluster frick. But he was a freaking visionary. Way ahead of his time with stuff like in stadium ads, PPV, TigerVision, season ticket seat donations. Oh and he hired some damn good coaches: Skip Bertman, Pat Henry and Sue Gunter.

ETA: All LSU fans should read Broadhead's book. Sure its one sided, but still pretty eye opening.

Exactly.

Bob stepped on a lot of good old boys toes.

re: What caused LSU Football's putrid 90's run?

Arguably, it started with a very good football coach, Bill Arnsparger, not paying the attention to recruiting that he needed to. Then, Mike Archer was elevated to head coach before he was really ready. It worked short term as LSU went 10-1-1 and finished in the top 5, but Archer struggled in recruiting and lost a number of top prospects to out of state schools. Prop 48 did make things tougher (as some have noted) but that in NO way excuses Archer's poor recruiting. Then, LSU selected someone who just wasn't a good football coach or even a remotely intelligent man, Hudson "Curley" Hallman. A disaster of a coach who looked like he could coach because he had Brett Favre of all people as his QB at Southern Miss. Fortunately, though - and this is often forgotten - Hallman could recruit fairly well. This left Dinardo with a reasonable amount of talent, which helped us to 3 winning seasons. Dinardo then lost his way, mostly due to poor decisions with respect to assistant coaches, but he stockpiled much more talent than our next, highly competent coach, Nick Saban, would ever admit publicly. Things got good at that point.

Joe Dean was an incompetent AD. It was under his watch that LSU was run into the ground.
