re: What caused LSU Football's putrid 90's run?

This is the correct answer. He wanted Spurrier at UF and he convinced the board to snub Spurrier(who really wanted the LSU job) in favor of Archer.

Nah... while he may have convinced LSU to hire Archer, it had nothing to do with Spurrier. Arnsparger didn't hire Spurrier until another three years after that.

There was a dip in talent and prop 48 was also a negative factor, but there was still talent in state, we just weren't get any of.

Hard to blame Prop 48 while guys like Marshall Faulk, Warrick Dunn, and Ed Reid were going out of state. The was talent, and Curley got a lot of it still. He was just a terrible terrible head coach. He had to get the talent much better than what Archer was recruiting from exclusively Baton Rouge.

Very wrong about Archer and Hallman. Archer had talented players. Curley was an absolute idiot.

The death of Bo Rein then as many have said, the talent of Brett Favre which lead many to believe Hallman could actually coach.

Prop 48 passed in 1986, in was in place long enough for people to adjust by the time Faulk* was coming out, let alone Dunn and Reed who were well after. It was a factor right after it passed cause La schools were not good and kids were unprepared.

Next to the Spurrier non sense, Marshall Faulk is my biggest revisionist pet peeve He went to SDSU at a time elite powerhouses like Miami, Notre Dame, FSU and Nebraska were recruiting La. Everyone missed on him, the only guy that might have snagged him is Miles.

I was so happy with that 7-4-1 record in Dinardo's first season. That Indy bowl victory over Mich St was lIke Christmas for a 10 year old.

Regarding Gerry DiNardo and the coaching pool... Mack Brown was the number one choice in 1995, I believe. He was at UNC at the time, very successful, we were just unwilling to pay enough for him to leave. Pat Sullivan at TCU had accepted the job in principle, we just were unable or unwilling to come up with the money for his buyout.

ding ding ding. We can blame Archer and Hallman all day long, but they didn't hire themselves. Joe Dean ran a 2nd rate program, but was happy as long as he was in the black. People like to blame Lou Tepper for DiNardo's down fall. We only had Tepper because DiNardo's first DC, Carl Reese left for Texas and a big raise with Mack Brown, who wanted the LSU job but not for what Dean wanted to pay. Emmert came in a knew we were leaving big money on the table by being cheap. I've heard Dean not only wanted to give DiNardo another year, but wanted to low ball Saban.

If you want to blame one guy this is your man

Well Michigan got leroy hoard, miami got several players as did notre dame and FSU. Archer was a good assistant but not a good head coach, Hallman had brett favre so he was overated, Hallman recruited some decent talent but was not a good game day coach.

Your Joe Dean picture reminds me of his most frequent call when he did color for LSU basketball games: "Came up arn (iron) on that shot, John (Ferguson)".

He definitely hired them, but its left up to them to coach. I can promise you he had nothing to do with that.

re: What caused LSU Football's putrid 90's run?
LSU under archer only lost Michael Carr (Clemson)

He also lost a guy named Michael Jackson from Kentwood. Dude was a 6'4" wide receiver that could fly. Went to Southern Miss and was eventually drafted in '91 by the Cleveland Browns. Had to retire at age 29 due to injuries, but had a few good seasons including tied for NFL lead in TD receptions (14) in 1996.
