Headline: Amtrak lost $800M on cheeseburgers and soda

LINK

quote:

Taxpayers lost $833 million over the last decade on the food and beverages supplied by Amtrak, which managed to spend $1.70 for every dollar that received in revenue.

quote:

“It costs passengers $9.50 to buy a cheeseburger on Amtrak, but the cost to taxpayers is $16.15. Riders pay $2.00 for a Pepsi, but each of these sodas costs the U.S. Treasury $3.40.”

Are they raiding minibars? How the hell does it cost that much for a can of soda? Something doesn't sound right and, my guess, it is corruption.

Don't worry. They'll make it up with MRI machines and OR rentals.

Perhaps the sodas and burgers have to buy a ticket to get on board? Or it could be the inefficiency and redundancy of the over paid unionized railway workers.

The government can't make a profit on a soft drink and a burger in a monopoly situation, yet we are going to hand them the reins on healthcare...

That's the total cost of providing the food and drink, including wages paid to the servers.

Any company that receives substantial govt. funding should not be allowed to serve soft drinks of any brand, and damn sure no cheezburgers.

Jesus. There are small town shacks that can make money off of selling burgers and cokes. They need to get Robert Irvine in there.

There is no incentives to cut cost in Gov. operated or subsidized industries. Read the history of the Transcontenintal Railroad and how much money was wasted and how inferior the rail was because the gov. was rewarding the railways for miles laid and nothing else.

Why does all ground transportation have to be government run?

yes, we subsidize Amtrak.

We subsidize all transportation, or did everything think that roads were free?

All in on the "You didn't build that" motto, huh. Where did that collective purse come from?
