Not really a big deal. Sure he'd love to get a gold, but he'll just take the break and be ready for the Open.

Well, that certainly opens the door for both Federer and Murray. Djoker is really the only one, IMO, who I would say would not necessarily be an underdog against a healthy Nadal.

It's not the first time we've seen big player pull out of the Olympics, and for a player like Nadal who puts a beating on his body....I'd rather him be healthy at the end of the season then see him get knocked out of the Open early.

I never considered him to be the kind of guy to pull out.

On fresh grass in a best of 3 format? Meh. Nadal has struggled in the early rounds of Wimbledon before and in the Wimbledon warm up tourneys. He usually really hits his stride the second week once the grass is worn down and plays more like clay

Well considering there are four opens a year and an Olympics every 4 years I think it's a pretty big deal; and for him to withdraw like that I think it's somewhat serious, I doubt he would withdraw like that just a a precaution for the US Open unless he really doesn't value the gold medal much.

I wonder if he was afraid of the drug testing?

It's got to be pretty serious. Nadal is very passionate about his nationality. Guy has a ton of pride and was supposed to be carrying the flag for Spain in the opening ceremony. No way he drops out unless he's got a serious injury. Maybe not threatening to the rest of his year, but there's no way he's missing the olympics to rest

He's the defending Olympic champion. I'm sure he'd love to defend his title since it's a rare tournamnet; however, he just got knocked out in the 2nd round of Wimbledon. It's not shocking to me that his body needs more rest.

I forgot its a best of 3 format until the finals. That pretty much opens the door to anyone to win this tournament. Heck, even Roddick and Isner have a chance to do well in the singles.

And he also swept right through the French Open and went to the finals at the Australian. He may be injured, but I don't buy the excuse that he is out of shape. He also hasn't played a tournament since Wimbledon.

I'm not saying he is out of shape. I'm saying something is wrong and his body needs time. With the way he plays it's not shocking that he couldn't play in an extra "major".

Probably needs the mental rest just as much.

Per Roland-Garos

quote:

Our 7 times champion Rafa Nadal has pulled out of the 2012 London Olympics, saying he is "not in condition to compete" and that it is "one of the saddest decisions of his career". What a shame for the tournament and for Rafa, who won the gold medal in Beijing in '08. Spain will have to find a new flag bearer.
