Look at the lack of offensive talent around around Archie until Hank Stram showed up. I'm not exaggerating when I say the lack of offensive talent may have been unprecedented in the history of the NFL. And then when Stram's talent matured under Dick Nolan, they had perhaps one of the worst defenses in the history of the NFL, as well as a locker room literally full of cokeheads. Archie deserved better.

Most folks just don't understand how bad the Archie teams were most years. As to Bobby. Let me say that if Drew had carl (3rd an long) Smith as his coach he would have been long gone from here or put a gun in his mouth. One of the worst OC's in the history of the NFL.

Unless Brees plays until he is 50 I don't see anyone surpassing Manning's loss total. Poor guy.

good thread/ Worse coordinator, Carl Smith or Rick Venturi? Brees 33 losses in 95 games, today's countdown QBs Kilmer & Everett (#17) had 29 & 30 losses in 49 & 47 games... mind numbingly bad

Re Shuler: I posted this a few months ago but once more won't kill anybody. I seem to recall there was one game where Shuler finally seemed to have turned the corner (I visualize it outside so it was an away game). The Saints had a lead very late and just had to gain a couple of first downs to win. But Ditka ordered Shuler to keep passing. He ended up throwing an interception and the Saints lost. And Shuler was never again the same player. Does anyone remember this?

Carl Smith.......Woody Hayes reincarnated. The Saints were the only team in the league who would sit on a 3-point halftime lead

Look at it this way. Everett took his last snap in '96. We had 11 QB's start a game over the next 10 seasons until Drew.

I was actually a big Blake fan, and it pissed me off how they did him in regards to brooks.

seriously, I can't remember a time when it looked like Shuler was turning the corner, he sucked. three games that really come to mind about him that year where the San Diego game at home, the road game in Chicago, and the home game against the Seahawks. in the San Diego game, he tossed like 2 or 3 ints. I remember that Jim Everett was the Chargers QB and he threw a late TD pass to put the game out of reach. He looked over at the Saints bench as he trotted down the field after the play and gave them a cocky look to suggest that they should not have gotten rid of him. in the bears game in Ditka's return to Chicago, he threw a bomb to Randall Hill late in the game that ended up winning it for us. To me, that was his best moment as a Saint even though I think he had a mediocre game in general. in the Seattle game, he got picked off and the guy ran it back for a TD. The Saints rallied for the win but I don't think he finished the game. I think either Wuerffel or Nussmeier finished the game at QB. Doug Brien hit a field goal for the win in OT. I think this may be the game you are thinking of only it wasn't a road game. I don't know how much he played the rest of the year, or if he did at all. He didn't return the next year though

oh and here is a small clip from that Seattle game. Trust me on this, I've watched too many season highlight tapes it was after Brien's kick that won it for us in OT. We became a team Today- Ditka

Hearing the name Carl Smith makes my ears bleed. He was the worst. Still can't believe we turned into a winning organization with a HOF quarterback and a Super Bowl win. Have to pinch myself sometimes. I remember going into the Dome on Sundays during the Ditka era hoping the game would be competitive. Thank You Brees, Payton, and Loomis. WHO DAT!!!!!!
