| Bobcats want James Harden for #2 pick (Posted on 6/14/12 at 1:33 pm)
SIAP. I think you have to give this some thought if you're OKC and you don't plan on giving Harden a max deal.
quote:
The Charlotte Bobcats are eyeing the possibility of dealing the No. 2 overall pick in a trade that would bring a more established player, multiple sources told CBSSports.com. Rod Higgins and Rich Cho understand that the Bobcats need more than just a talented rookie, whether it be Bradley Beal, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Harrison Barnes, Thomas Robinson or even Andre Drummond -- to make the Bobcats competitive from their laughingstock of a season. One source said that Oklahoma City's James Harden could be in play due to the Thunder's salary situation following next season. GM Sam Presti already has Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook on the books for more than $29 million next season -- and both Harden and Serge Ibaka will command huge contracts after the 2012-13 campaign. Charlotte was an NBA-worst 7-59 this past season and there is no clear-cut second overall pick behind Anthony Davis, who will be taken by New Orleans with the No. 1 selection on June 28. Beal and Barnes can both help Charlotte on the offensive end while Kidd-Gilchrist and Robinson would bring a toughness, especially on the defensive end. Drummond is a high-risk choice despite his physical tools. None of these players is considered a franchise-changer -- and that's why the Bobcats would prefer to deal the pick and land an established player such as Harden who could come in immediately and make an impact. Makes sense for OKC. If not they run the risk of not signing him and getting nothing if he walks during FA. Hard to imagine they pay him what he is worth with RW and KD on the books

If I was OKC I would jump on that. They would have to get some more players from charlotte to balance it out though

Would be great for the bobcats but the thunder should want more than just the pick.

I didn't want to assume that was a consensus. However, Harden is still worth more than Henderson and the #2

I'd have to include Kemba as well.

if OKC doesn't plan on signing him then I'd do it in a second but I'd also push for another pick or player but not too hard

That's the main thing. If OKC isn't planning on signing him, the alternative is letting him walk for nothing. Getting SOMETHING for him, especially a #2 pick and additional player, is much better than nothing.

The Bobcats aren't going to be able to keep him after next season. #2 pick looks pretty good if OKC has a player they really like at #2. They can afford him for a few years on his rookie contract.

This. Kemba and #2 for Harden. Who would they take though with that pick?

And depending on who they pick/how he pans out, this would also give them an opportunity to work him in the cap (possibly) long-term with KD, Westbrook, and others after his rookie contract. No chance they can do that in near future with salary considerations for Harden

I'd have to think Beal would be the pick. He can provide the scoring off the bench similar to Harden but he's on a rookie deal. The money they save would allow them to keep Ibaka even if someone offers him over 10 mil a season.

Texted my buddy that works for Thunder and this was his immediate response. Harden is probably already the 3rd best SG in the league behind Kobe and D-Wade. And those guys are aging quickly. He realistically could be best 2 guard in league within 3 years. #2 pick is big time but doesn't mean that there's another Harden in this draft.

Bobcats think they could keep him when he becomes a FA?

him being Harden, or Henderson? because they'll be able to afford either as far as I can see. I was actually saying to someone the other day that Charlotte would be the first team trying to max out Harden in summer 2013. if I'm OKC, I keep Harden until summer 2013 and see what I can get for him then if I can't afford him.

I agree with that in terms of value. But when you can win the world championship, and follow that up with the #2 overall pick, and another first round pick, that's hard to pass up. OKC is a team built through the draft. They obviously have alot of faith in that system and can get a great player at 2. Hard to say what position they need though, they are loaded.
