re: Alltime Saints Jersey # Countdown to First Preseason Game

Hoby Brenner News:
(event just passed) The second annual Fish for Life Texas Hold ’em poker tournament is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Bella Collina Towne & Golf Club, 200 Avenida La Pata, San Clemente.
By donating $100 toward Fish for Life, a nonprofit organization that provides fishing trips for people with special needs, registered tournament players will receive a Dana Wharf fishing trip valued at $59, entry in a raffle for Nike clothing, a chance to bid in live and silent auctions and match wits against former pro football players Jim Everett (Rams), Hoby Brenner (Saints), Lance Scott (Giants), Kirk Dodge (Lions), Dave Wilson (Saints) and more. LINK
-------------------For the oldsters- can ya imagine spending time hanging with Brenner, Dave Wilson, & Jim Everette? There would be some interesting tales to stir up.

Eric

put the Ronnie Lott hit pic in cuz he is one player I have a difficult time imagining existing in today's pansy hitting NFL

Martin was taken in the 7th round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He was the 27th wide receiver taken that year.

Martin played in 10 NFL seasons from 1985–1994. In 1987, he helped lead the Saints to their first playoff appearance in franchise history, only to lose to the Minnesota Vikings 44-10 in the NFC Wildcard. The following year, Martin was a Pro Bowl selection, catching 85 receptions for 1,083 yards and 7 touchdowns. After playing 9 years with the Saints, he spent the last year of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Martin holds several Saints receiving records. He ranks first in receptions with 532, second behind Joe Horn in touchdowns with 48, and first receiving yards with 7,854. He ranks second behind Joe Horn with most 100-yard receiving games with 18.

]NFL Career Stats
153 Games
553 Receptions
8,161 Yards
14.8 Avg.
49 Touchdowns
---------------------
not bad for a #179 draft pick...

179th Overall - New Orleans

"Mean" Gene Atkins was the Saints' 179th pick out of Florida A&M in 1987, and started 87 games for the Saints and 31 more for the Dolphins through 1996. Atkins' great 1991 season helped lead to the Saints' first division title: three sacks, 5 interceptions and a league-high 198 return yards, four forced fumbles and two recoveries, plus 368 kick return yards.

But two seasons prior with this very same pick, the Saints picked LSU WR Eric Martin, who went on to own most team receiving records through 119 starts for the Saints. Martin scored 48 touchdowns for the Saints and one more in a quiet retirement with the Chiefs in 1994. Rivaled only by Joe Horn and Marques Colston as the greatest receivers in team history, Martin played in 143 straight games from 1985 to 1993. He still owns the career receiving yardage record, though Colston is within reach.
---------------------
2010- Several players in this Super Bowl grew up in Louisiana, reared as rabid Saints fans. Reggie Wayne, an Indianapolis Colts receiver and Big Easy native, said he spent Saturday nights praying for breakout games from the former Saints wideout Eric Martin.

Wayne noted this week that deep down, on any other week, he remains a Saints fan. The bonds run that deep between the Saints and the city they call home. Wayne also said he had seen “a lot of brown paper bags” in his life.

re: Alltime Saints Jersey # Countdown to First Preseason Game

if ya wanted a # as a new Saint that no one identified another player with it might be 83. Slim pickings... The top player is prolly Donte "Hamstring" Stallworth. I can't do him though. He is one of the most representative players of what the Haslett era was to me- athlete extraordinaire pretending to be a football player... -excuse me, he just holds a place in my memory of what was wrong in those years. So who? Keith Poole! Torrence Small! Greg Scales! Kenny Duckett! Billy Miller was decent for three years. The notorious Albert Connell- every whodat should know the story on this embarrassing scumbag (Haslett guy again). I'm gonna go old school in some painful years-

Tinker Owens, gotta love the tough name His brutha was the Heisman winner at OK before him. Such a prototypical Saints draft choice... a 4th Rd for a guy that was 5-11 and a 170lbs (maybe with full pads). For such a tiny guy though he was a gamer. Problem? No Saint pics from some google imaging cept this one-

somebody email him and let him know he's in our countdown and we need a black n gold pic...

Some interesting players for #82. Boo Williams, Quadry Ismail & Eddie Kennison. But really, there's only one choice IMO. John Tice:

A hard nose tight end back in the day when TE's were blockers first, blockers second and receivers hardly ever. Back when men where men and football was football.

Tice played for 10 years, all with the Black & Gold. He had 158 receptions for 1603 yards and 15 touchdowns.

re: Alltime Saints Jersey # Countdown to First Preseason Game

This was a tough one, but one play, one play gets this player for me today because it was such a big play. And he wasn't even on our team at the time.

#81 for only a year in 2005 Az-Zahir Hakim!!!

The play, December 30, 2000. That's right, the Saints first playoff win ever.

With 3:52 left in the game against the reigning SuperBowl Champion Rams, Marshall Faulk had a 25 yard touchdown reception to cut the lead of the Saints to 31-20. The Rams went for an onside kick which Dre' Bly recovered. Two plays later Warner completed a 42 yard touchdown pass to Az-Zahir Hakim. Faulk then caught a pass in the endzone for a two-point conversion which cut the lead to 31-28 with 2:36 left. St. Louis failed to recover the second onside kick attempt but forced New Orleans to punt.

The Play: The punt was muffed by Az-Zahir Hakim, and the Saints' Brian Milne recovered the ball to seal the victory. The first playoff victory in Saints history.

Hakim later signed with Detroit for three years, then the Saints for the 2005 season, started two games and had 34 receptions for 489 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 34 punt returns for 260 yards and 9 kick off returns for 171 yards.

He bounced around the league for a year or two after then opened up a burger place called Quickies Arizona.

That was way before me. Says he played here for two years after a long career with Chicago. I went with Hakim just because of how excited and happy that play makes me. Michael Hayes was also a #81, but I hate the Falcons so much he's tainted to me.

Even though he only played three seasons for New Orleans, the club retired his #81, one of two numbers originally retired by the franchise.

The NFL Network ranked him as the #9 Pass Rusher of All Time in its Top Ten show.
