Southeast Baton Rouge School District Proposed

LINK

quote:

Though the Senate’s lawyers have yet to finish describing the exact lines, White said the proposed district would extend southeast from the I-10/I-12 split, south of I-12 and east of I-10 to the parish lines.

If approved by legislators and voters, the Southeast Baton Rouge Community School System district would include nine public schools in the Westminster, Inniswold, Woodland Ridge, White Oak, Shenandoah, Woodlawn, Santa Maria and Old Jefferson neighborhoods, he said. The schools would include Southeast Middle, Parkview Elementary, Jefferson Terrace Elementary, Westminster Elementary, Shenandoah Elementary, the Woodlawn schools and others, he said.

Just think about the potential of the schools in this area if it broke away from EBR. Woodlawn would be one of the top schools in the state both academically and athletically. The private schools like St. Michael and Parkview Baptist would probably lose some students.

The naysayers in the article from inner city BR say that a SEBR school system would suffer from being too small, but with 9 schools that wouldn't be small relative to others such as the Central Community School System (5 schools), or the Zachary Community Schools (7 schools). Those systems seem to be doing fine since leaving EBR.

Would the Federal government allow such a development? In other areas they combine jurisdictions to enhance the educational opportunity of dysfunctionals, how is Baton rouge going to be able to get away with educational secession?

What next neighborhood schools?

If we were allowed to return to neighborhood schools, with defined boundaries none of this special legislation would be necessary.

No discrimination just a right to neighborhood schools. Neighborhood elementary schools would feed specific Jr Highs, and jr highs would feed specific High schools.

Market forces would work very rapidly in most areas. Improving communites, saving transportation expenses and creating better safer schools.

The last paragraph of the article:

quote:

Any measure would have to pass both chambers of the Louisiana Legislature with a two-thirds vote in each, White said. Then, the amendment would be placed on the ballot and a majority of the state’s voters, as well as those in East Baton Rouge Parish, would have to approve. Then, the voters in the newly created tax district would have to vote to set up a tax system, he said.

Seems like a tall order. Anyone privy to the inner workings of the LA legislature think this could pass?

This would significantly siphon off property taxes for the whole district. I do believe property taxpayers are sick and tired of supporting the entire parish, and for the most part have to pay for private schools.

EBR was racist in the 60s so the federal courts decided a deseg policy that basically made everyone go to random schools

so, basically, everyone who could, put their kids in private schools

add in the dysfunctional developments over the last 3 decades and it's a horrible system

and we can't change it without the feds saying it's ok

no wonder BR is such a shithole
one would think that a plan implemented 50 years ago would be deemed outdated and the feds would allow the local populace to decide how to handle primary education themselves.

oh shite i crack myself up sometimes

in calcasieu our desg policy was "majority to minority." if you were a majority race (aka black) in your school, you could go to any school you wanted where you'd be a minority. so if you were a student at LCB (blcak school in NLC) you could go to Barbe (white school in SLC)

I am praying this actually happens. Baton Rouge needs this so bad like the 40 year old virgin needs to get laid.

The whole segregation case that started in the 50's royally screwed up out education system. With the quality of the schools improving, the quality of life in BR will improve drastically.

I'm praying the feds actually have the common sense to ok this.

There's talk of South Lake Charles breaking away from the Calcasieu Parish School district as well. The school board had an opportunity to appeal to the fed. govt. for unitary status which, if granted, would have ended desegregation rules. They voted to NOT seek unitary status by a 9-6 vote.

Suffice to say I'm skeptical of both the concept and Jindal's motives, but that wasn't really my point. This proposal will move forward while the education system as a whole is in an unprecedented state of flux and may look entirely different than when the breakup plan started.

re: Southeast Baton Rouge School District Proposed
EBR Parish School System went to neighborhood schools years ago. The problem is "school-choice." It allows a kid from a failing school to attend a better school out of his attendance zone. That's why you have kids from Scotlandville going to Woodlawn Middle and kids from Mall City going to Southeast Middle.

And what do you think happens to the "better" school when you enroll 200 students from the "failing" school?

EBR used to have outstanding schools until the federal government destroyed the system.

You end up with Woodlawn High.
