It's not THAT exciting. It would be a lot better if the Higgs wasn't there,

which is one half of the experiment. Remember the null always supposes the negative response.

One way or the other we will have an answer.

I'm not.

My issue was with his religious tirade against a "nickname", largely used by the media...in his quest to bash scientific work.

Yeah, I'm not particularly fond of the 'God particle' moniker precisely because religious people infer all kinds of things from it.

If they do indeed find the Higgs after they build up more data, then it's time to start looking for evidence of supersymmetric partners. SM really needs 'em.

the 'God particle' moniker
This isn't even supposed to be the name. The moniker "God Particle" was chosen by the media from a book (The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?) with the same name. Funny thing is that the book was initially supposed to be called "The Goddamn Particle," but the editor wouldn't allow it.

This whole God Particle nonsense is useless and annoying. It isn't the name and does nothing but get the religious in a frenzy.

Its called the God particle because its presence it what gives all things mass, without it we would not exist, nothing would.

It is predicted to exist by theory and mathmatics but so far as never been seen in the decay of energetic collisions

Wrong. See previous post.

Just to add a little extra that I just read, a renaming competition was held and its name was changed to the "Champagne Bottle Boson." Weird, but it actually ties into physics since the bottom of a champagne bottle resembles a Higgs potential.

He's ham-handedly making William Lane Craig's Kalam argument...which sucks all on its own.

That totally explains all of those anti-science tweets I received this morning from unknown celebrities.

quote:

It states that at some point in time, all will be saved. There is no eternal hell

That verse does not mean, what you think it means.
quote:

verb
1. to cause (a person) to accept or be resigned to something not desired: He was reconciled to his fate.

It simply means that the goofballs posting in this thread will eventually be forced to accept that there is a creator. The evidence to that effect, at some point, will no longer be in question. However, there will be punishment for their disbelief.
quote:

Mat 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Those are Christ's words. So the reconciliation comes before the punishment, not after. They will be fully reconciled to the fact that their creator cast them out. In that there is no doubt. These posters are currently acting as unprofitable servants, seeking to destroy the very foundations of His creation.

Sucks to be them.

really?

So he gave us reason, only to punish us for using it?

seems kind of odd.

Nah, you are just thinking too hard about it Cpt. Just use your brain less and it will all make sense.

I'm partial to pantheism. Makes a lot of sense to me and lacks the emotional, egotistical aspects of most major religions.

You have zero evidence to the origins of the universe, yet you still believe its coming. I'm done arguing with you. You have your faith, I have mine. Each time they call a news conference, its just more of the same, yet you get all tingly knowing that one day, some day ...

You will be called to account. Good luck with that

Just to settle you down a bit, there is no such thing as the "God Particle." This particle they are trying to find isn't even called that. It is called the Higgs Boson. The only reason it is called the "God Particle" is because of a guy who wrote a book with the same name and the media ran with it.

He wanted to call it the "Goddamn Particle," which I assume is because of the fact that they couldn't find it.

Get off your high horse and actually do some research. The "God Particle" has absolutely nothing to do w/ God or religion.

Shit, they just tried to rename it the "Champagne Bottle Boson."

I believe that with each passing day we learn more and more about the natural world. Will that mean at some point we'll know everything there is to be known? I dunno...but probably not. That in no way makes me eager to drop a warm and fuzzy placeholder in it's place because I'd wet my bed without one.

"I don't know" is a perfectly acceptable answer to questions for which we have yet to find answers.

I enjoy the fact that our species, in such an remarkably short period of time, has been able to unravel the amount of mystery we have. I realize your ilk would have preferred to remain ignorant of the true workings of the natural world, peering up at the firmament and the pretty twinkling lights, but not me.

quote:

You will be called to account.

I almost certainly will not...and neither will you. My only regret in dealing with smug dickheads like you is that, when the time comes and you slowly slip into nothingness, there will not be that, "Oh...wait...so there really is nothing?!?" moment. You know...that one you jerk off thinking about for guys like me...finally finding out that Yahweh is real and he's pissed?

if there is no God and I will not be called to judgement I hope I will have left a positive impact on the world, the people who knew me. Along with other things.

I know I said I wasn't going to post but I just wanted to post that.

I feel like some Christians spend to much time worrying about the number of people they convert.

I rather focus on bringing love to the world, and helping the needy out. If God is real then he will take care of the conversion part.
