OK. Just a bit of a resource tool here because a few said they were following my experience. I am by no means an expert on the issue, so when someone finds a mistake, please let me know and I will change.
If you plan on getting an ar-15, build it yourself. You get to pick out the parts and put it together. It doesn't take long and honestly, if you like doing things with your hands, you would find this satisfying.
At the end of the day, you can put it together and say you did that. Now, I am only talking about the lower receiver. I haven't played around with an upper receiver.
Anyway, with the advent of the internet, you can find dozens of reviews on just about any part you are going to put in your gun.
You need to buy a stripped lower to begin with. That is only a piece of metal milled to the specs to hold all the pieces. They are pretty much all alike. I bought a Stag lower, and I believe they make their own, but otherwise only about 4 people make all the lowers, they just have different names.
You need to purchase a lower parts kit then. Many people make them. I went with the daniel defense kit because many of the reviews liked the trigger on that one. Now you can always do a number of trigger tricks to improve the trigger or put a whole new trigger in. Lots of options.
As everyone says, an AR is like a lego set.
OK, you have your stripped lower and your lower parts kit. You need to buy yourself a stock. I threw on a bushmaster 6 position stock but there are cheaper options.
That is about all you need to put together a stripped lower. You then purchase yourself a complete upper and you will be good to go.

Honestly, that is about it. Picking out your parts will take the most time. You can get all these parts shipped to you, but if you do, you will have to have the shipped lower shipped to an ffl.

All the parts I needed together on one site with great prices to boot. You can find other sites though that have good prices. Lots of people talk about Buds.
Now you can always buy a kit from someone like delton or model 1, but I wanted to pick out parts for it myself. If you are going to build, you might as well get the full effect.

Agrees. I built my first one having never owned an AR before. Wanted to bukld it so i could get a better understanding of how they worked incase i ever had a problem. There are videos on youtube that will walk you through every step.

my first upper will be on my doorstep tomorrow
got the lower last friday from essential arms in krotz springs
i went with a del-ton upper
plan to add a grip-pod and carry handle very soon
i'm pretty good at assembling things as well as following instructions, so i don't expect it to be too difficult

I bought my bushmaster predator 20" upper for about $420.
I would sooner have that bushmaster. I could have gotten other name brand barrels for the price you have listed on the site I gave.

I just ordered all the parts for my fourth build. Lol I do warn u its kinda like restoring old cars once you build one you'll want another diferent cal diferent length something lol. My newest build is for hunting Two uppers 300 OSSM and 458 Socom 458 will arrive in 2 weeks and maybe 5-6 months on the custom 300 OSSM

Are these AR's full auto? I have no knowledge about AR's, but would like to buy/build one for my collection, but I want full auto, and do know about the "hardships" of making that happen. I guess Im asking if you build your own is that a way to circumvent the damn full auto laws?

These ARs are semi. You need a class three license or something like that to own a full auto.
Not sure the point of owning a full auto. Yeah, you can fire a bunch of rounds, but why?
I'm sure there are ways to illegally modify them. I don't know them, but I would suppose you could. Or you could pay for the license.
I do believe there are modified stocks that allow simulated auto fire. The bump fire stock and the ssar-15 can do that for you and are legal and you do not need a special license.

Just buy a slide fire solutions stock. Close enough to full auto and very affordable at $349

They have been having double star and CMMG. I bought two CMMG receivers from them and both went together without a hitch. First one has a Del-Ton 16" M4 style upper. Second has no upper but has a slide fire bump stock

I wanted one of those as well but it was cheaper just to buy the cmmg for $95 than to pay $88 plus the FFL transfer fee.

The key here is building them are fun, you will love your rifle that much more because you put it together, and you can do so much cheaper.
Its a win/win/win for you.
That is why everyone suggests building one.

what tools do i definitely need for putting it together?
i've heard many suggested tools to make it easier, but what are the must haves?
i was thinking hammer and punch set
i have allens and screwdrivers, just looking for specialty items that i may need
