Question for Audio/Video gurus. UPDATED WITH DECISION

Point me in the right direction. All I ever owned was all in one $200 surround sounds but I wanna step it up a notch or two. I'm looknig to keep it under $1000 if possible.

All I need is the receiver and speakers, right? What brand receivers should I be looking at and what certain functions should I be looking for?

Speakers.. Which brands should I start looknig at? Once again, I dont need the absolute best but I want something that'll last a long time.
Also, I plan on running two speakers to the patio. What will I need to make this happen?

Should I go to a AV store or order online from new egg or something similar?

UPDATE:

Went to AVI yesterday and the guys told me I would be better off with a stereo receiver and a pair of floor speakers. I listen to music way more than watching movies. This is the setup I'm thinking of getting, opinions?

They quoted me $1200 for the whole thing including wire. I havent found a website online to beat that yet. Should I pull the trigger?
