stupidest fricking statement on this board. there is a reason that wild pigs are legal to hunt at night in louisiana, they are a problem that we need to get rid of or at least try to manage.
I didnt say it was illegal a-hole. What is the problem with the pigs?

So was this pig eating the OP's crops at the time?

doesn't matter if he was at the time or not. Eventually that one would have or had. Being that it was 300 pounds it had probably found a pretty good place for some fine cuisine. They are spreading across the country and state to areas that they are not natural and don't have the predators to keep their numbers down. That is where the humans come in.

And this is a generally accepted thing? (I mean this as a sincere question, not fricking with you)

I would generally say that most people would clean the animal and use the meat, but when boars get bigger the meat goes to shite and it isn't worth it because they are much harder to skin and clean than a deer would be.

They don't belong in Louisiana. To quote Edward Norton in American History X, "NOT WELCOME".

Just playing devils advocate here, but killing and letting them lie can add or an ever growing coyote problem that alot of areas are experiencing too. It's kind of a double edged sword.

Herein lies my problem with it guy. If you're gonna eat it kill it.

well yeah, I wouldn't want to try to take a bite out of something that is still moving, especially a hog.

You know what I mean..... Ive got the stupidest fricking post ever but I dont see the justification of killing the animal and leaving it there. (knew it was too large to eat when he shot it)

My main problem was that you related killing a hog to killing a marlin or sailfish. Marlins shouldn't be killed if you are going to use the meat or not, There a some circumstances that it is acceptable but for the most part not.

re: Shot a big boar

Why did you shoot it then? Do you also kill Marlin or Sails and throw them back overboard?

Several points:

They are not native.

They are not really even the wild version that existed in their natural habitat.

They damage crops, and compete with native wildlife for food.

Boars are basically inedible.

Sows and choats are possibly the tastiest critters in the woods.

I shoot every pig I can.

I leave boars to rot or feed buzzards-they got to eat, same as a worm.

This is ecouraged by the managers of every NWR in the State.

I feel no guilt.

I am doing a service.

re: Shot a big boar

I knew someone would ask that question. The meat on a boar that big is nasty unless you can 'sweeten' them by penning them, castrating them, and feeding them sweet feed like sweet potatoes for a month or two before you slaughter them.

That's not an option here. I don't have a way to carry a live dangerous animal out of those woods, partially because you can't get a truck in there now because the hogs have destroyed the road. And he wasn't going in the trap anyway apparently. So when I got the chance to shoot him, I took it.

The reason I kept trailing him into that thicket was because I WANTED TO EAT HIM! Didn't realize he was this big till I got up to him. Had he been smaller I could have drug him far enough to reach with a four wheeler. That was the plan but when I tried to drag him, it was obvious immediately that was not going to be happening without a draft horse or something to help, and I don't have one. Had he been edible and I couldn't move him, I would have cut him up and packed him out in pieces. I was really disappointed when I realized I wasn't looking at a couple hundred pounds of sausage.

Now as for the coyotes I expect to come to him... Gonna shoot them too if possible because the deer have been run off this place by the hogs and stuff and we want deer. Not hogs or coyotes.

We own the land. We get to manage it how we like. And the hogs are causing a ton of damage to the roads. They've got wallows in the middle of roads that completely cover the whole road and are two feet deep in spots. So yes, I'm going to kill every last hog I get a chance to shoot. If they are edible, they will ALL be eaten. But if they aren't, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

I get where you're coming from, but I don't think you grasp the severity of the hog problem that is sweeping across Louisiana and other states.

These things aren't native and destroy crops and property. Killing a big motha like the OP did takes one more breeding hog out of the population.

To the why kill it and not eat it point, people catch and keep big pelagics and tarpon with no intention of eating them. If you're concerned about one nuisance pig being killed, don't ever go to the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo, where literally tons of fish are brought to the scales and then discarded if they don't make the leader board.

And one other thing I learned last night. From now on when I'm up there I'm carrying my home defense shotgun with me just in case I have to trail another one into a thicket. The next one might not be dead.

Agree with the Marlin comment, kind of pussy'ish of me. However I do believe that unless you plan on eating it or it is endangering your safety or someone else's safety, you dont kill it. That wont be a popular opinion here but thats mine.
