Barry switzer had 1 loss or less in 8 seasons....

Meaning he would have likely been in a 4 team playoff 8 times if they had that back then.

He won 3 titles as it is, but could have had even more in modern times.

No clue why he gets overlooked so much in the GOAT conversation.

The cheating thing doesn hold weight to me at all. Because coaches like Bear and Wooden (different sport I know) have some legendary cheating stories but it was never made public/nobody cared then

If you read Barry's book and other accounts he interviewed for the Michigan State job in the 1970s. Can you imagine Barry, Bo, Woody, Gary, Earl, Lloyd, Jim, in the big ten in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s?

OU played Texas as well as Nebraska every year. That's two big games. They also played USC, tOSU, and the U in home and home series. They're schedules were comparable to FS.

Nebraska games of the 80s were epic. I got to see the Miami games of that era too. I have some funny Troy Aikman, Boz, and many others stories.

Louisville players got caught with hookers in their dorm rooms. Switzer's players were caught with machine guns, his star QB being the first one arrested. There were also rapes in the jock dorm, multiple ones. His rep goes way beyond simply cheating to win.

I know Rick Reilly is a major douche...but he did say this:

"The Boz: Confessions of a Modern Anti-Hero" is released. The book is by former Sooner Brian Bosworth and Sports Illustrated writer Rick Reilly. "The stuff we talked about that didn't go in the book could have put away OU for 20 years," Reilly tells The Oklahoman. "We took out the stuff we thought was too bad for OU, too incriminating."

January 13, 1989: Redshirt freshman cornerback Jerry Parks allegedly shoots sophomore offensive lineman Zarak Peters in the chest. According to a 1989 Sports Illustrated story, Parks had been reportedly drinking. The argument rooted from a cassette tape that Parks claimed Peters borrowed. Switzer said two weeks later on, "The Barry Switzer Show," "Obviously the Jerry Parks incident was very unfortunate and a tragic and unlucky situation for us."

January 21, 1989: One week after the shooting and 19 days after the Citrus Bowl loss, sophomore running back Glen Bell, sophomore offensive tackle Nigel Clay and junior tight end Bernard Hall allegedly gang rape a woman in the Bud Wilkinson House. Switzer said on his Oklahoma News Network show, "You can't speak in general terms and say that these players are out of control. That's totally ridiculous."

February 13, 1989: Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson is arrested by the FBI on charges of selling 17 grams of cocaine to an undercover agent for $1,400 on January 26. The transaction was recorded by an FBI agent. Four hours before the arrest occurred, Switzer announced that he was suspending Thompson and moving him out of the Bud Wilkinson House. Oklahoma interim president David Swank tells The Oklahoman a day later, "The faculty is very concerned. They go to national meetings, as I do, and the first question that is always asked is, ‘what's wrong with your university?'"

February 15, 1989: Switzer tells the Associated Press that he's responsible for Oklahoma's troubled football program because he recruited the players who caused the problems. He still says he intends to remain head coach at OU. "I feel so used by these four or five kids. They've done me wrong. It's not fair what they did to us. They didn't think one thought whether what they did was right or wrong. It's just so selfish."

February 16, 1989: The Oklahoman reminds readers that it had called for Switzer's resignation in 1982. A day earlier, the Tulsa World called for both Switzer and athletic director Donnie Duncan to resign. The Tulsa Tribune, Dallas Morning News and the OU student newspaper all previously called for Switzer's resignation. "I'm tough and thick-skinned. They don't bother me. I'm not going to quit. The only people who can fire me are the regents. The president and the regents are the people I work for - not the newspapers, not the TV station, not the fans," Switzer tells the AP.

The media was all in on the "Dr Tom is a saint" narrative. So, naturally, Barry had to wear the black hat. Nebraska was as slimey and dirty as anyone but the national media decided Tom Osborne was holy, so there you go.
As a kid in the 70s and my college years in the 80s I hated Barry Switzer. Now? Love the guy.

And they've perpetuated that narrative even after damning stuff came out in the 90's.

I'm not saying Switzer was some rogue - hell, he got criticized for defending his players - but Osborne didn't for defending and KEEPING ON THE TEAM for their bowl game - total thug Lawrence Phillips.

All Osborne cared about was the bottom-line - like most coaches.

Dr. Tom - it was so lame; like he was a Professor of football and goodness. He spoke little and with a measured tone and stoicism.

It was EASY to paint Switzer as the black hat cowboy because he spoke off the cuff and like hillbilly.

This article is from 2002 though:

When Tom Osborne coached Nebraska from 1973 to 1997, his program was at times viewed by outsiders as a runaway train. There was running back Lawrence Phillips dragging his girlfriend by her hair down a flight of stairs and defensive lineman Christian Peter being accused of rape. The Cornhuskers under Osborne experienced the highs of winning national championships and the lows of the arrests of numerous players.

Today, Osborne, a gracious, soft-spoken Congressman representing Nebraska, must feel a strange sense of vindication as he looks around college football. Accusations of rape, drunken driving and all-around thuggery seem to plague the sport. There are also numerous allegations of cheating, epitomized by the Southeastern Conference, in which 6 of the 12 member schools are either on probation or being charged with unethical behavior.

Thus, the idea that college football's image would never be worse, propagated during the days of Osborne and Barry Switzer -- whose Oklahoma players were accused of rape, drug dealing and a campus shooting -- might have been wrong.

Sounds like he knew how to party.

Damn, imagine the craziness that happened outside the game when they met up with Miami in the 80's.

Every person I hung out with or had class with. Just the other day saw Lawton native CT. Watched him race for dollars on a hooker street.

You know Barry's a good guy when he can put the wood to one of his friend's/Asst coach's wife and they're both still friends.

I just saw a list where he was listed #12 all-time.

Top 10 was:

10. Nick Saban
9. Bobby Bowden
8. Woody Hayes
7. Osborne (that's bullshite - he was better than Osborne) Osborne didn't win shite until 20 years after he started coaching Nebraska.) Osborne had every team in the 80's ranked in the Top 5 at the end of the year because they played nobody - he had usually one loss - Oklahoma and then he'd play his bowl game and LOSE - always.

outside of the Big12 Osborne couldn't beat anybody.

Nebraska went 2-9 from 1980-1991 in bowl games against Top 25 opponents. Nebraska was just like Notre Dame is now.

Then he flipped thw switch to compete with the big boys by offering supremely talented malcontents that couldn't make grades for most schools.

6. Frank Leahy
5. Joe Paterno
4. Bear Bryant
3. Knute Rockne
2. Pop Warner
1. Fielding Yost

Nick Saban at number 10 on that list is an absolute abortion. Imagine thinking Bobby Bowden or Joe Paterno is a better coach than Nick Saban. Wow

My claim to fame with BS - I got to take a piss in the urinal next to him at a Popeye's in North Little Rock one night. He was raising hell about no paper towels.

Oh yeah, the dude is short.
