I have one that rated for 300wm. I shoot it with .300blk, 6.8spc, .308win, 6.5 creedmoor.
It is still very loud but it isn't a boom. Just a very loud crack. You could shoot without hearing protection but you wouldn't want to shoot it a bunch of times without it.
The .300blk with subs though, is stupid. really all you hear is the action cycling.

I just picked up a 300 short mag with Leupold Scope, I haven't shot it yet.
