Acorns

Friggin bumper crop of acorns this year going to make food plot hunting tough this year in SW Miss...I got branches hanging low with acorn mass...usually keeps our buck sightings down in these bumper crop years...literally have to find active feed trees near bedding areas to have any luck at all....hopefully we get some extended really cold periods this year...

I'm in SWLA and they are dropping now.

In SW MS there is a significant difference between Water oaks and Cherrybarks. The Water oaks drop first. And the deer will use them in late Sept and Oct. But it seems like the Cherrybarks drop later. Closer to November. And when that starts the deer will walk through the Water oaks and ignore them to eat the Cherrybarks. Acorns look the exact same to me. But seem to be different to the deer.

Water and willow come off this time of year into Oct and usually all at once or pretty quick at least. Nuttall begin falling about the same time but I've seen nuttall acorns still in the trees in March the following spring before bud break. Overcup fall in Oct/Nov and pretty quick as well. those dates are rough fyi. I've heard deer crunching OC acorns well before I see them.

Pay close attention to any white oaks you have on your place. The deer flock to these hard in the areas I hunt. They will walk past live oaks to get to the white oaks.

I don't know the exact dates they start to fall I believe by mid October thru November is when I regularly see them on the ground.

white oaks at the club in jefferson county are not close to falling. got three different stands on different areas with white oaks and they're still green. probably 3-4 more weeks.
