Now, it looks like the functionality is finally showing up on the Pixel, no Home necessary (hah!). In the Assistant settings on Pixel phones, a new Home control section is starting to show up.

I can confirm this. I have assistant in my Nexus 5x and it has it!

Damn. Thats a game changer. Amazon needs to get their act together and make all their devices talk to each other and controllable by the phone.

Apple still hasn't even put out a device like google home yet. They are currently working on it apparently for a stand alone device.

Their homekit project has been slow to develop

sorry. I'm sure a lot of people use it. I shouldn't have made that assumption. It was more based on my bubble and friends. I don't personally know anyone who uses it.

So now my google home is simply a bluetooth speaker which i really dont need since i have chromecast audios set up to my patio and indoor speakers as well.

I don't own a pixel but i can see this functionality eventually hitting my 5x.

I guess the only real difference is i know my Google Home is always in the kitchen whereas i sometimes leave my phone in the bedroom.

and a year ago using an app called tasker i was voice controlling every device in my house both by talking (which would turn my phone on and respond) or if it was in the next room, just speaking to my android watch.

you made it sound like apple did this first.

everything you need to know. not sure about smartthings but i assume you'd just modify the tasker script to point to the ST app instead.

It can be good for the living area or kitchen to leave

Think of it as a free companion to the Google home
