John Willis "Red" Brodnax. He was the MVP of the 1958 National Championship team.
ETA: Link to his bio. He passed away in 2006.

Thanks. Somebody told me he passed away a while back, do you know if that's true?

This guy took it forever...
But I agree, simple nicknames from a different era are awesome and we need more of them.

I think it was maybe because he was Irish.

I've got a really CSB on him, for those that are interested.
An older friend/former hunting buddy of mine - a semi legendary high school basketball coach - was really close to Red. Red, his wife (may have been SO at the time), my buddy, and his wife/SO were at the state fair game, back when Tech played Northwestern every year in Shreveport. This would have been in the mid 60's.
A group of younger folks were in sitting in front of them, got pretty drunk, and began using, in the words of my older friend (who did not appreciate the use of profane language) "ugly language".
Red ask them to stop that around these ladies several times, and they wouldn't.
Red then gets up, throws one of the punks over his shoulder, and began walking to the top of the stadium. The guy asked what he was doing, and Red said "I'm 'bout to throw you out of this stadium".
They got to the top, and the guys said "please don't throw me out of here".
Obviously, Red didn't, the guy apologized, and behaved the rest of the game.
