That quote in the article is directly from Herb Vincent. See quote below when Saban was hired. Bertman wasn't AD till 2001.

Joe gets all the credit for Saban. You couldn't be more wrong...

Joe also hired Pat Henry who won a few national championships while he was here. I'm guessing that you'd be hard-pressed to find another AD with two hires of this caliber on his/her resume.

Hate to hear that...I think his son is currently a sports commentator...

Joe Joe does or did some BB commentary, but his daily gig is being the AD at Birmingham Southern U. He was also an assistant at MSU & UK and a head coach at Birmingham Southern.

Met him twice, once in Starkville before the 1980 LSU-State basketball game he was doing and then again before the 1995 Auburn football game.

He was SEC basketball prior to ESPN. Until the late 1970's, if you lived in the South the only basketball game you got was "TVS'" SEC game of the week with John Ferguson doing play by play and Joe Dean doing color. Every team was on at least once with generally Kentucky,Vandy,Tennessee and Alabama on twice.Dean was always so enthusiastic."John, Kevin Grevey really got after it."

He'll be missed.

Mr. Dean was one of the finest gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure to know. He went to school with my Mom & Dad and my Dad played basketball with him & Mr. Pettit.

After moving to BR after my parents divorced, Mr. Dean found out and made sure my Mom knew if she needed anything, to call. I ended up going to school with Mark & Mardi and Mark & I were good friends and sports competitors in Elementary & Jr. High. My sister went to school with Joe Joe.

When my father passed away a few years ago, I called a few of his old friends, including Mr. Pettit and Mr. Dean, and as a few have mentioned above, I spent 30-45 minutes listening to stories about my Dad and their shared college days.

I've argued with people on this board about Joe Dean, the AD, and I choose to not do that anymore, because I'm obviously biased. So I'll just say I've never known a finer man, a man who loved LSU more, a better ambassador for Round Ball in a Poiny Ball Conference, a better color commentator, a more influential and ardent supporter of young coaches and their job placements, or a better example for and influence on generations of the young men who attended Dixie Basketball Camp, not to mention young people, such as myself, who just met you along the way.

I thank you and love you, Mr. Dean. What a life you led! Rest now and cheer on your beloved Tigers from above.
