Effect of Revamped Offense on Defense

Story so far this year is that the offense has been shining and the defense seems to be missing a step from what we've been accustomed to seeing with Chief.
The biggest complaint regarding the defense during his time was focused on T.O.P. and the offense leaving the defense to fend for themselves. Has never been much to be concerned with but the defense getting "gassed."
Through three games, we're actually losing the T.O.P. battle, and I'm wondering if this is a concern heading into SEC play. Oregon is showing this year that the quick-strike offense can still coexist with a dominant defense.
So...
Option A) The T.O.P. battle isn't nearly as big of a deal as it has been made out to be.
Option B) The defense is hurting themselves by allowing further sustained drives
Option C) The running game needs to get back on track (with the reinstatement of Hill) so that we can milk the clock when need arises.

We can't judge anything until we have played a couple SEC games. At least wait till after Georgia.

top may or may not be relevant in a ball game. just like yardage gained may or may not be relevant. imo, if our top is less than our opponents this year i would say, by observation alone, that is due to quick scoring on the offense and by our D not getting enough 3 and outs. seems to me a number of our td's have come from just outside the red zone and thru the air. it also seems to me that we have not forced that many punts this year.

This is true, IF you are confident that either your offense can score almost at will, or that the opposing team can not score at will.

People complained last year bc our O couldn't do much and punted, leaving the D on the field longer.
Now this year people are complaining because our O is scoring too fast, leaving the D on the field longer.
Lose lose situation.

You would never know it the way some people are acting. A top 30 offense and defense can win a natty. I'll take it.

We are doing extremely well, but there are cracks in the foundation (youth, mostly). We've gotten burned a few times by players not the caliber of those we put on the field.
I wouldn't raise the alarm, but it needs to get fixed. We're still an impressive defense, but I'd take our DOMINANT defenses from 2010-12 over what is CURRENTLY on the field.

ok, ok. please listen to yourself. people complaining about people complaining seems to be getting more time of possession (of the podium) than people complaining. therefore, i would like to be one of the first to complain about people complaing about people complaining.

Our competition has been subpar so I would hope our defense would rank well. It does but that doesn't mean squat at this point other than it means they aren't horrible. Indicates average at worst.
But watch the defense! You don't need a stat to tell you when someone can't shed a block or more likely takes their self out of position.
The good news is our DT and DE are doing a very very good job. If we had problems their it would be much much less likely that their would be significant improvement this season.
But the good thing is the problems we are having on defense at least have a decent chance to be fixed. Brain mistakes... understanding.
And consider that half the time it wasn't even the eventual starters that were making those mistakes. Two guys fighting for a spot means twice the chance that one of them "gets it" / "steps up".
I am hopeful that by the Georgia game the defense will be more settled. And hoping it doesn't cost us this weekend.

TOP is a pretty useless stat, generally.
But the defense can't get off the damn field either.

Auburn will be challenging w running QB (if needed) and wide open offensive play calling. I'm looking for the defense to play well and get better and better as the game moves along. Georgia will be a different situation with most accomplished QB in SEC history and All-American running back. If we get through Sept. we'll be #3 in the country. Right where we need to be. One at a time..... NEXT!

Our LBs need some fine tuning but the D always takes longer than the O.
