Can someone break down the steps to bring my AR with me to North Carolina?

Going to visit my newborn niece and my brother in law is an army ranger, so were trying to get a family range trip together while we're down there.

Is it even worth the hassle to bring it?

It doesn't have to be shipped to a FFL?

You can pack it (check with airline for specifics) or you can ship it to yourself (no FFL needed)...

Nope

Just wasn't sure how they could know if I'm selling it to him or just shipping it to him for when I get there.

Looks like that's the way Im gonna do it

Last time I flew with a gun it was fairly painless, but that was like 10 or more years ago.

With the airlines now, its almost guaranteed they are going to lose something.

Im with everyone else, ship it to yourself.

And dont forget ammo.

Every airport is different. If you fly from NO, they wont touch it. They'll ask you if its unloaded and make you sign a form. There was an incident a few years back where one of the ticket reps was shot when they chambered a round. Not sure how NC handles it. I know Denver opens the case to make sure nothing is illegal but that's it. Than you sign the form. With all that, ship it FedEx and insure it!

I have done this dozens of times, not a big deal at all.

Gun needs to be in a hard lockable case. Go to the ticket counter, tell the person there that you need to declare a firearm, they will ask you to demonstrate that its not loaded. They will make you sign a declaration form that will go into the case. They will then send the gun in the unlocked case to TSA for further inspection and TSA will inspect the firearm, lock the case and send it on its way.

At your destination grab gun case off the baggage carousel. Sometimes its held with oversize items or at the airlines baggage office in baggage claim.

I suggest a gun case with wheels as you may have quite a hike to get from baggage to your transportation.

I bought my first AR from Jims in BR and flew into Reagan National Airport right outside of Washington DC with it when I lived in Northern Virginia.

This is spot on. I hunt for my job quite a bit and fly out of NO with guns regularly. The only difference I would say is that I lock my case and wait for it to go through the TSA machine. If they need me to unlock it- which they never have- I'm there to do so. This way, I know the case is securely locked.

I've done this quite a bit and it's hassle free. Make damn sure it's unloaded. Double check or and triple check.

You have to declare it to the airline, it has to be in a hard container that is locked.

Thanks for the answers.

Probably just gonna FedEx it with insurance so I don't have to worry about the airline "losing" it.

I flew into Canada with a Benelli.

Easy as pie, just declare it and have a lockable hard case.

If you don't want the hassle of airlines break the rifle down to it's three basic groups: upper, lower, bolt carrier and ship it that way???
