Anyone here do any financial contract work?

Just got a "no" back on a full-time job I have been interviewing for for 3 months in Georgia. They had 300 applicants. Made the final round of interviews. Treasury Manager said he wanted to hire me but there was one guy who was slightly more qualified. Kind of pissed.
Have been talking to a number of recruiters around Charlotte after this and it seems most of what they offer is contract work. Pay seems good but it seems like there may be lapses in employment if I was to take one of these contracts.
Has anyone here had any experience with this? I currently have a full time job but it's become mundane and stagnant.
ETA: will contract work be a blemish on one's resume years down the line?
