This is a myth podnuh.

And it's one big reason why hundreds of thousands are crippled in student loan debt for the rest of their lives and depression/suicide is steadily increasing.

The whole crock of "he's a self made man" is a pile of bullshite.

For example, if you work hard enough, demonstrate loyalty and honesty, and have an incredible work ethic you, a bunch of ESPN suits can fire you because you make too much money.

But hey, that's just business.

say what?

Our Entitled Society live under the assumption that everything must be "their way or no way".
That is why people are depressed.

The only Oppression in your statement is in their minds.
Go out and find a job and start from there.
It's called the "bottom".
From there you work your way "up"

Everyone can't start from the "top" no matter how smart or deserving "they" think "they" are.

AS far as CJ goes.

There is nothing Patriotic in any sense of the word by becoming a muslim.
This country was not nor will ever be an "Islamic State"

People here need to stop confusing the two.

Get out of here with that bullshite. Its thinking like that keeps holding back a lot of young blacks. Instead of it being pounded into them from a young age that they can be anything they want to be. Instead ppl like you spout off with this bullshite they don't have a pray to improve and move their family upward in life. So what happens, these grow up believing this and don't even try to better themselves. Liberals like you always want to scream racism and such at others. But you all are the worst of all with this mentally. This isn't 1860, this 2013. It was the same in 1988. If a young person white or black is willing to work for they can achieve anything. You could actually make a case that a young minority has a even better chance because of there being so many programs out there for young minorities.

Well said. I agree 100%.

He was a head case. Left because he didn't want to share the ball with Shaq and Stanley. When they were all on the same team, he was mad because he had to pass the ball more inside.

Nor is there anything patriotic about becoming a Christian.
Nor will the US as we know it, ever be a Christian state.
Your point?

He was picked #4, and his draft status stood to drop. He timed it right. Didn't Shaq win the Naismith the following season?

Shaq is dead to me.
He turned his back on America by becoming a Muslim.
Presumably, he plans to strap a bomb to his body and kill innocent children by late this afternoon.

I'm not sure to admire that type of idealism, or laugh at it.

The myth of unlimited upward mobility in America will not die easily. It is a logical extension of the trickle down theory which has created so much disparity in income and wealth in the US over the last 30 yrs or so.
Statistically, the odds for such upward mobility are much higher now in other, emerging economies.

No, it isn't. It's only called a myth by people who want to equate "difficult" or "harder for me than for someone else" with "impossible." The fact that some people have an easier road to success than you do does not mean you do not have an opportunity for success. Everyone in this country does indeed have an opportunity for success, even though some are much more difficult opportunities than others. And every day, there are many people facing those much more difficult opportunities who decide to do what they have to do to take advantage of them rather than give up and complain about how unfair it is (even when it is truly unfair). Mahmoud Abdul Rauf is, in fact, one of those people who did precisely that.

Certainly not so long as it remains true.

Until it is zero here, the "myth" is not in fact a myth. The lack of education that leads to such misunderstandings makes taking advantage of the opportunities available much more difficult, which often leads to frustration and confusion regarding whether the opportunities were there in the first place.

Good luck overcoming.

Yep, his ankles were getting worse and there was no way of telling whether his Tourette's would progress or how quickly. He definitely made the best choice for him and his family. But I sure would have loved to see what it would have been like with him on the outside and a polished Shaq (as a sophomore) on the inside.

Good to know Christianity has been in the forefront for the last fourteen centuries in fighting slavery and violence.

The British navy, the armed force of the most powerful Christian nation at the time, routinely stopped slave-hauling ships in the Mediterranean Sea & Atlantic Ocean & freed the slaves in the 1800s. Most of those were headed to Islamic lands where slavery flourished unchallenged even after Christian nations had banned the slave trade. Islamic regimes continued to enslave their conquered subjects into the 20th century in places such as the Balkans & northern Africa. Christian nations repudiated slavery 150+ yrs ago by their own accord. In contrast, slavery remains legal in several Islamic lands.
