Has current recruiting process jumped the shark?
Posted by YellowShoe on 6/13/13 at 4:02 pm00
When LSU offered scholarship to Dylan Moses, people wondered about the process. It seemed like an outlier. Over the last year, there has been a spate of such offers to athletes all over the country.
Most recent one is from Kentucky and in football no less.
People wondered about Les making the offer to Dylan Moses. They thought Dylan was a great player when Saban extended an offer. Do people even wonder when they hear about School X offering a scholarship to a player in grade Y? Or did schools miss out on offers to J Clowney and his ilk?
UCLA
USC
Edit:
Will this impulse to offer phenoms at younger age be curbed by some rule that colleges can offer only to high-schoolers or that they have to be juniors or seniors?

That 13 year old dominated every one at camp. Even though he was 4-5 years younger. Some kids just deserve an offer, no matter how young.

That big/fast...offer. Find a position, later....Plus, it doesn't hurt, as they are just feelers/impression makers, and not binding till Feb of senior year of high school...ie., they cost nothing, but a stamp.

Would you please explain that?
Can a student commit only when he's a senior and eligible?

They can commit earlier, but nothing is binding till signing day, which is always the first week of feb, their senior year. Coaches can move on, just like players can change their commitment...When they sign, its binding and under regulation

My vote would be to limit recruiting to only high school seniors. These kids are thinking they are super stars before setting foot on college campus. They will now start thinking they are super stars before playing a down of high school football. I think its a bad trend with all the 7th and 8th grade offers.

...err no!
Revenue is the driver of past, present, and future spates. Money has not jumped the shark.
Difficult to predict how the NCAA will act in the future, but as the NCAA is trending away from unenforceable rules, I can't imagine them outlawing offers when the recruitment will happen regardless.

I think Steve Rehage got an offer from Pete Jenkins when he was a Sophomore in High School. I think at the time he was at John Curtis.

Betcha if it was binding for schools to honor these offers it wouldn't be happening. I don't see the big deal though. It's not binding for the kids or the school.

The offer is a meaningless piece of paper, who cares.

I think it's a worrisome trend, like the arms race in the Cold War.
I don't want to see college football recruiting go the way if college basketball recruiting. It's a slippery slope, but in the end it's up to the head coach whether or not he thinks a kid is talented enough to offer at that age. It's a gamble that's for sure
