...In Facebook Buzz
quote:

Two of the National Basketball Association’s marquee franchises are moving in starkly different directions when it comes to movement in People Talking About This on Facebook for the past week, according to sister page PageData, as the defending champions, the Miami Heat, nearly doubled the PTAT gain of its nearest competitor, while the Los Angeles Lakers, after barely qualifying for the playoffs and being swept out of the first round, lost more than double the PTAT of the next team on the list.

...The New Orleans Pelicans, formerly the New Orleans Hornets, may have had little success on the court this season, but the team’s recent name change propelled it to sixth place on the list of PTAT gainers for the week, making the Pelicans the best-performing non-playoff team.

...The top 10 NBA gainers in PTAT for the week were:

Miami Heat: 154,224
Chicago Bulls: 81,214
San Antonio Spurs: 38,122
Dallas Mavericks: 7,882
Golden State Warriors: 4,599
New Orleans Pelicans: 1,939
Sacramento Kings: 1,638
New York Knicks: 1,498
Orlando Magic: 1,400
Charlotte Bobcats: 1,113

Granted we're not on there for a BAD reason, its also not a good one. I would love to be on there for winning.

I was excited until I saw our number compared to the Heat's number

Probably not. I do twitter searches for Pelicans to find news and probably the single most common Pelicans tweet is something like:

quote:

The Hornets really changed their name to Pelicans? That's a terrible name for a basketball team. SMH.

I would imagine most of the facebook mentions are similar.

People will come around on the name. People already are. I know several that "HATED IT" and now like it.

It just takes getting used to, like anything else.

Yeah, I'm not worried long term, I'm just saying the current buzz is probably not positive. But there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I'm actually curious to see how much laughter from the NY fans in attendance when our name is announced on Draft day.

i'm debating if i feel like spending $20 to go to it. with only one pick, i'm not sure it's worth it.

I guess it is cool, but definitely taken with a grain of salt. The numbers aren't that much different from the teams right below the Pels, whereas the teams in the top 5 have much higher numbers (especially the top two). Also I do think some of the talk is probably negative.

I really like the name and the logo, but there are still a lot of nay-sayers out there.

This seems useless. The same people in Louisiana still won't watch this team unless we are winning. It sucks but its true.

I'd be willing to bet a sizable chunk of the traffic was about "Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban" and not the Mavs.
