Do you shoot your 1911 collectable, or is it a safe queen?

this is my 1943 Union Switch and Signal.

I want to shoot it, but then again no.

A gun like that i would probably put a few rounds through it to say i did then pick it up.

A Union Switch and Signal 1911 is one of the most collectable 1911s out there, only falling a bit short to the insanely-priced Singer 1911s.

I would maybe take it out on the occasional trip, but that thing is worth some SERIOUS dough.

I don't like owning safe queens but if I inherit something of crazy value like that, I would barely shoot it. My dad has an old 1914 German Luger P08 that we've brought to the range just once.

Whats the story? How did you acquire that? I would not shoot it.

It's a family heirloom that came down to me.

It's in perfect condition, so I guess I won't shoot it.

The risk is not worth the reward IMO.

A well made gun should be able to handle a few shots. If it was mine I would have to shoot it, if only a few shots.

An old gun will not get hurt by being shot or anything. It will just decrease its value since it's older.

My modern 1911's are all shooters.

If I had a gun like that (a historic one) it would be a safe queen.

For example, I have a 1941 M1 garand, a 1903 Springfield from 1917, and my pawpaw's M1 Carbine. They don't get shot anymore, all safe queens.

My view is if the gun is of a quality to be considered a "safe queen" in the first place then it's probably fully capable of sending lead down range. I have an all matching vet bring back M1 Garand produced in 1942. It still gets shot because it's a quality firearm and that's what it was made to do.

The entire idea of having "safe queens," with perhaps a very few possible exceptions, reminds me of old men who buy Ferraris only to take them out for Sunday strolls 10mph under the damn speed limit.
