Should I worry about the black/gray layer of oxidation in my crawfish pot? Or is it fine just to leave it?

If I need to remove it, what's the best way to do so?

That's normal and fine. Don't scrub it.

Having that layer makes it easy to know how much water to put in the pot w/o having to fill up the basket with crawfish first.

Leave it as it is. It's most liky aluminum oxide

Best way to remove is to grindit away or have the pot anodized. Neither of these is easy or useful in any way

The oxidation of aluminum is literally skin deep. You can clean the stuff with acetone and two minutes later it is oxidized anew.

Harmless, does not cause Alzheimer's as you might have read. What is very dangerous is using a galvanized container, like a garbage can, lots of lead and heavy metals. I've seen idiots do it.
