Ben Nichols is a better, more consistent songwriter than Cooley to me.
stylistically the two are typically doing such very different things.
I think cooley is a much better player/musician.i think cooley has a knack for turning out a quick/simple lyric that upon reflection has a ton of depth. he cuts things down to the bare bones but theres a lot more... wisdom... behind some of what he says. he also, as someone mentioned does capture characters very well, and stories better than given credit for. theres a level of intelligence that i think you dont give him credit for in his writing.
I think ben writes a much better sappy love song that can really hit you - he also can turn a really basic lyric into something that hangs with you but its more of a feeling he creates. he really does a better job playing on emotion with his writing. smart in its own way, but a different type of smart.
both very good at what they do. seen both many a time. will likely see both many more times. ask me who the more talented band is, and id say DBT 10 out of 10 times. Ask me which cd im playing and itll be much more split.

thanks. they just do such different things with their writing that its tough to compare.
the other way ive heard the two compared is that bens writing is so simple that its amazing it feels like it has such depth, and cooleys is at times so high level its amazing it sounds simple. they really get after things from very different perspectives.

Exactly the way I feel. I think DBT is better but there are many times that I find Lucero more enjoyable

DBT are definitely better musicians. Anyone who is honest can admit that.

Any fans of Slobberbone (terrible name)? They were a DBT contemporary that could hang with them live and Brent wrote better songs too (arguably)... Now Brents voice/growl turned some people off...

eg, where the devil don't stay is about inequality, not moonshining

cooley's songs
He's so rough around the edges, but damn if its not perfect at times... and you're right, he usually has one turn of phrase, a song, that leaves you in awe...

exactly - i think that speaks to what i was saying above with the idea that he writes some really complex stuff but has a helluva knack for making it just sound simple.
there are more than a couple times hes left me rolling lyrics around in my head for extended periods... some songs its happened years after a first listen, some right away, but rarely do i find trash or throwaway material with him.
when hes at the very best he cuts stuff down so far to get big ideas into just a couple words and shoves a ton of philosophy into a small space - very dense and layered when you start wading through it, but still something you can sit back and enjoy a beer and relax with.

Slobberbone kinda evolved into The Drams. i saw them open for DBT. They only released one album, Jubilee Dive, but it is one of my favorite albums of the last decade. Brent Best as a songwriter and musician definitely belongs in the same conversation as the other guys mentioned in this thread.

yeah, I saw the Drams open for The Bottle Rockets at Tips when they released that...
My favorite tune off that...
