Desiree Roll loaded with crispy, tempura shrimp, tempura crawfish, crabstick, spicy tuna and rice wrapped in seaweed and then tempura fried again

Desiree roll at Kyoto 2... What category of sushi even is this? Doesn't seem authentic to me... Seems very Americanized... Do a lot of places have these type of rolls?

Well technically sushi only refers to the rice.. not whether or not it has fish or whether or not it is raw.

That being said, I think the rolls with all this shite on them are disgusting. It's just horrible fattening filler. I guess it makes sushi dinners cheaper since surely all that crap makes you full after 1 roll.

The only rolls I really like are things w/ tuna on top and snow crab inside.

What really aggravates me is the 2-piece sashimi bullshite. I have to spend a small fortune to get full on tuna and yellow tail.

I pretty much only eat sashimi/nigiri (unless I'm at Sushi Yama with amazing rolls) and I hate the price too. I completely see where the price is necessary, but it's expensive to eat that stuff.

My advice: Eat sushi at lunchtime instead of dinnertime. That's really the case with all upper-end types of food, but especially sushi. Every sushi restaurant offers bento boxes and sushi lunch specials. You can get a special with soup, assorted sashimi, a roll, etc. for $10.

These photos are from Drew Orleans, but I had both of these rolls at Sushi Yama the other day and they're amazing:

NOT cheap though. The top one was like $18.

Amazing though.

It looks good, yeah, but shite, for a tiny piece of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail? wrapped in rice paper?

That little rice roll is quite large and loaded with fish...
