Kal Penn was fricking awful on HIMYM. Completely useless character and misuse of Penns comedic skillset.

By a mile. I never understood why they tried to make "how you doin" into some guaranteed panty dropper. I loved it in the elle macpherson episode when he tries to convince her he can pick her up. He uses the line and she's like "I'm ok. You?" and he can't handle it

They tried to make it into a panty dropper? I always thought it was a running joke.

I think it started in the first season when every one was just blobs of undefined 90s stereotypes of each other and they just decided to keep it

Eh if people are still saying "Legen....wait for it.....dary!" in 10 years, maybe.
But people still say "how you doin'" it has eclipsed it's own meaning and lasted far beyond the show. That's the sign of a good catch phrase.
How many people say "Dy-no-mite!" and have no idea where it came from?

Was going to agree with Barney's being way better but you convinced me with this. Barney's might be viewed as better just because it is newer.

kal penn's character sucks dick but kal penn is still cool but not as cool as paul rudd.
also, how you doin is way fricking better than anything barney says.

That's its whole reason for existence, that's the line joey uses on women to somehow magically get them to be attracted to him. There was one episode where he used it on Rachel and she was all like "oooh joey c'mon stop!" while blushing and giggling and such.
I mean it has a place in the Friends world and I don't mind the phrase at all, I just think it was odd that they tried to portray that as some magical phrase to get women.
