They play to win

i think you miss how to objectively define a QB who "plays to win"

what statistical basis do you use to stratify QBs in this manner?

I have been a 49ers fan my whole life. I will defend smith non-stop. He had no chance. Too many systems. He did ok under turner as oc and flourished under harbaugh. I think he is a solid starter, and nola fans spoiled by brees forget what he did to them last year. That being said....I am very happy about a 2nd and a 3rd. But smith is no slouch. He will impress.

i mean by almost any measure (other than volume), he had a really good 2011 and was doing better this year. again, flacco proved this year that you can still win a SB with a mediocre QB

A lot of people like to say he sucks, yet he was pretty average before Harbaugh as well. When I think "sucks" Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, among others come to mind, not someone like Smith.
