Career Selection Program for Young Students, do you know of one?

I could very well be wrong, but I think we do a very poor job of helping students in high school choose what they think they want to be when they grow up.
We expect and hope an 18-20 year old to make a career choice with very little exposure to varying careers.
If there's not a program to expose kids to careers, I'd like to start one in the Baton Rouge area.
I'm not looking at this as a money making venture, although it probably could be one... but I really don't have the time to develop another business... but think with a little help, I could create a volunteer program that could really help our kids.
Without boring you further with my ideas, is there a program that exists that I'm just not aware of?
ETA: By "program", I don't mean a piece of software or website.

I wish more people felt this way. After the whole you can be whatever you want to be that you hear k-5 all the teachers care about is getting students through the system as far as public schools go. We had nothing to try and help students focus on it other then when we had ceramonies where principles and what nots would put on a big show for the parents. I always hated the line
"you have time in college to figure it out"

There's a few groups out there working on STEM initiatives in the High Schools in EBR. I'd start there.

I wish there were more programs to help kids out on this front. Particularly for those capable of greatness but naive/without sound guidance.
You can be whatever you want to be. Sure. But you can also be poor and unable to put food on the table.
There's a lot of talent out there that won't make an impact on the world because by the time they realize that life is not a game their ship has sailed.

This seems like a great thing for parents to handle, although an outside organization like you want to start would help.
This should not fall under the umbrella of the school system, since they would use it as an excuse to spend way too much money and still do a poor job of it.
If they had this in my area, I would consider volunteering.

Thanks Golfer, good to know there's something going on out there...
I'm thinking of a broad, ongoing program that will be easily available to any interested student, without homework, without projects, primarily just listen, look and learn. Although some activities could be done to help... personality tests etc.
I'll bore you with my initial ideas in my next post.

First of all, I'd like to start a program in the Prairieville area, because that's where I'm at... and where my kids are.
My ideas are simply ideas, and you can probably get the jist with some bullet points.
*Weekly or monthly "seminar" or "class"
*2-3 guest volunteer speakers per "class"
*Visual aides and lively speakers encouraged
*Guest speakers tell about their career, likes, dislikes, education required, expected pay range
*No fees for students
*Goal of low cost to maintain
*Any costs to sponsored by local businesses
*Open to all high school and maybe even middle school students
*If a 9th grader attended 6 "classes" per year, with 3 speakers each class for 4 years, that's 72 career exposures.

Thanks TigerAlum82... I'm glad you're in the business of helping people...
I'm hoping we can help a lot of kids without charging them for it, albeit broad brush strokes... but maybe they will explore from there and spend some $ with you!

The post was meant to help you would look at what they are doing and get ideas for developing your program. I have been retired from Counseling for 5 years. Sorry for trying to help. Furthermore, I am not, and never have been, associated with this program, but I do have a Master's Degree in Counseling and worked for 32 years in the field. I just know that they do quality work.
I had to edit this post because the more I though of your response to me, the more it really bothered me. You asked about program in BR and I gave you a program. Then, you berated me because it is a fee for service program, a fact that you acknowledged in your initial post, that was a possibility.
You know, a little kindness goes a long way and just maybe I could be of some assistance.

Here the problem that I remember from highschool and first two years of college everyone is pre-med pre-law getting a PHD in psychology or something like that and only 1% finish it out. So all the kids would be interested in the doctors and lawyer and not the careers that they might actually have

Sorry, TigerAlum1982... I took the "Our career counselors" to mean that this was your business.
If you took my response as berating you, I'm sorry, but not even sure what you're talking about. Making money helping people is what most businesses do. No biggie.
Since I thought it was your business, the offer of a possible sponsorship was legit, and my act of kindness. Seems like a bull's eye on their target market.

Apology accepted. I sincerely like helping people. I think it's one thing that draws me to this board. I really like to offer suggestions, help to people on here, if I am able to do so.

I completely fail to see where he "berated" you at all, much less how you can draw a motive from it.
