FF are better than 95% of modern radio rock. That's not much of an accomplishment though.

They may have been able to finally tune their guitars.

Is there anybody other than Paul McCartney that has been in 2 bands of that magnitude like Dave Grohl?
Grohl has also been in queens of the stone age.

If Grohl did want Nirvana to keep going would the band work with Mudhoney's lead singer?
No. Most people don't know that Kurt Cobain all of Nirvana's music (lyrics and music) until their final album when he allowed Grohl to write the song "Marigold".

Alice in Chains is my 2nd favorite band from that era behind Nirvana.
I've never understood the rivalry between fans of those bands about who is/was better.

Foo Fighters have like one good album (their first) and have been around since the mid 90s. Nirvana has 3 great albums and 2 awesome live albums and were around for 6 or 7 years.
Nirvana also was successful in making punk influenced music palatable for a mainstream audience. And they supported and introduced their fans to tons of awesome indie acts.
In conclusion,
Nirvana > FF

Yet many of their fans act as if they are the only band that has ever recorded music.

I don't think so. They're just important to people because Nirvana was a gateway to a lot of people's favorite bands. Nirvana is not my favorite band but they certainly started my serious interest in music.
You can say that about any band's fans. I find Led Zeppelin fans often act like they're the only band that matters.

least they didn't create a tv show to find a replacement like one certain Aussie band *cough*
That shite hurt me deep. Hutch was such an icon to have his legacy degraded by that shameful money grab from the remaining members
