I've been in stocks and mutual funds for a long time. Was going to buy a financial ETF in 08 but then the market crashed.

I have read that MF's are 10x the size of ETF's, but ETF's are growing much faster.

I bought XLP at $37.37. Consumer staples.

What are some good ETF's?

I bought DXJ Friday

It's a wisdom tree fund that tracks the Japanese Nikkei and has a hedge against currency fluctuation of the declining yen

I'm a fan of ETF Index Funds. I'm currently in IVV and EEM.

Well I'm not a prophet and I'm somewhat of an investing novice but I'm pretty confident that DXJ will be up 5% or more in less than 2 months from when I bought it.

I'll take that 10 times out of 10

SPDR S&P 500 ETF has been growing steadily since 2009. It is an expensive buy-in, though, currently sitting at about $153 a share.

This is clearly a novice question but as an extreme newbie relative to investments where would I go to purchase an ETF? How would I even begin to decide which one to pick?

I bought through my TDAmeritrade account. $7 instead of $18 for a mutual fund.

Or open a Schwab, E-trade, Scottrade account.

Ibelieve there are now over 1000 ETF's.

Vanguard VIG is good (same as VDAIX, I believe).

Look at the above posters and do research. The ETF I bought is rated 4-stars by Morningstar, with low risk/above average return. Plus, my family buys consumer staples every month (P&G, Walmart, Coke, Pepsi, Colgate) so I am buying something I know a little about.

Here is a good article on ETFs: LINK

Personally, I stay away from ETFs as an investment vehicle. I have only used ETFs to gamble (money I can afford to lose) and when I do I it's always on the short side for a very quick (2 days max) trade. I play the short side b/c ETFs have intrinsic decay. I understand that with such quick trades that decay probably doesn't play a role but it's just psychological with me.

People will probably think I'm insane but I gamble with my IRA account in a similar fashion

I'm beating the market by a pretty wide margin so I don't know if you'd really consider it gambling
