How is it that we live in such a seafood rich environment and most people are ignorant on how to buy shrimp and know when they are getting ripped off.
Today I was in a fairly reputable seafood store in New Orleans and they were selling what they claimed to 26/30 shrimp for $4.60/lb, only problem is they were more like 40-50's. Then they had some 15-20's, which in actuality were 20-30's for $5.40/lb. On top of that the heads on some of them were pink and looked like something I would use for bait. People were still buying them hand over fist.
This isn't isolated either, as I see this in seafood places alot. The absolute best place to buy is directly from the boat or dock, you're guaranteed fresh product and the costs are typically half of what you find in stores.

The best place to buy shrimp is right off the boat?? Wouldn't have figured that.

You have your sizes all wrong. People seem to really mess up size counts. Its a pet peeve of mine. And how do you know the actual size without doing a count on them?

Also I would think most people know that buying from a dock/boat you will get better prices/quality but most people don't need to buy in bulk. You won't save any money driving 25-75 miles just to buy 10-20lbs of shrimp.
