Help an Old Man ... erases while I correct

Not sure what I did on my gmail, but now when I insert a letter or word, it erases the characters immediately following, causes me to re-type everything that follows.

That is a pain in the arse when you hit it accidentally and have no idea whats going on. But yeah, insert is the solution
