Why can't Del Peiro obtain a redshirt year?

Because he was practicing basketball to some extent. It is to prevent people from taking more time to train before playing college ball. Good rule but it sucks for our situation.

He did according to his bio. It says he was in the band for two years before walking on and this is his third year on the team.

5 year clock starts when you enroll, not when you join a team

Sad it would have really helped him and us.

I would have liked to have him for another year as well but at least Johnny went out and got another 7 footer like a boss.

I don't think the recruit is as musically talented but hey....ya take what you can get.

If you redshirt, you can still practice with the team. Del Piero and Hamilton redshirted the same year (2 seasons ago) and still practiced with the team.

The rule on how many seasons a player can red shirt for Div 1 men's basketball:

Two Redshirt Seasons

Basketball players generally must use their four seasons of eligibility in a five-year period, with one redshirt year. The NCAA occasionally grants players the right to extend their playing window to include a sixth year, with two redshirt seasons. This scenario happens only if the player has missed at least two years because of circumstances such as injury or illness. Players do not gain eligibility for a sixth year if they have sat out one of the previous five years voluntarily.

Is he playing pretty well this year? There's been a lot of talk about him on this board lately. I hung out with him a couple of times before he walked on-dude was one tall MF'er
