How do you handle this question when asked? It's almost a trick question. You want to be honest but the employer can really just use it as a range for what they want to pay you.

You should know what the range is or have a good idea. This is your chance to be honest and up front. Tell them what you make and tell them what you need to make a change.

What if they already have a window of a range though?

Do not give them that number. Leave it blank on the application. If asked, tell them you are simply looking for a salary that is fair for the position and for your level of experience. Hold your ground. If they like you, you will not scare them away with this response.

The catcher is the experience level.

Unfortunately, that is part of the equation when filling a position, at least in the private sector.

Still, you do not have to share your current salary. Every position has a hire-in range. Experience and quality drive your position in that range.

Since my salary is publicly disclosed... I would tell them nothing but the truth
