In my opinion, this movie has not held up well over time. I guess it came out when I was younger and at the time, I loved it. Now it just seems pretentious and none of the characters are very likable, except for the main character kid. Though maybe that is the point and they are not supposed to be likable. Anyone agree/disagree?

I think it is a great movie, I like the kid, I like Russell and I think Jason Lee is awesome as the lead singer. The end where Penny tricks Russell into going to the kids house is great.

It's weird that you say this. I always loved it but haven't watched in maybe 5-7 years. I watched it the other day and didn't enjoy it nearly as much. Still some great scenes in it though and the music is awesome

I watched it for the first time a few months ago after having it built up a lot by my friends and was pretty disappointed. It was not bad but I didn't think it was all that great

to paraphrase Mitch Hedberg, this is true of all movies.

I still think it's great. I guess I was older when I saw it.

How does it not hold up when it was a period piece to begin with?

Yes. If anything it's gotten better with time. Think I'm gonna throw in the DVD as we speak.

Completely disagree.

It's a period movie, as someone else stated.

ETA: it's still one of my all time fav movies.

I like it. It's not one of those movies that you have to catch every time you see it on the guide, but it's still pretty solid when there's nothing else on.

This is one of those movies where music is actually an off screen character. If you can identify with the music, you appreciate the movie alot more.
